Literacy
Unless someone like YOU case a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. Its
not. This is a quote from the book, The Lorax. As a class, we have been reading this
Dr. Seuss book in order to honor his birthday and also to learn more about how
people can have positive and negative eects on the environment. With this book the
students worked on analyzing characters, making connections to the real-world, and
developed an understanding of cause and eect. Over the next few weeks they will
continue analyzing the book in order to write persuasive writing pieces and develop a
deeper understanding of how people can make decisions to impact the environment.
Please take some time to talk to your child about The Lorax and our environment.
On Friday, our class had the opportunity to Skype with an author, Jennifer Swanson,
to learn about her love of science and writing. The author that is from the United
States shared her new book called Uninvited Guests: Invisible Creatures Lurking in
Your Home. The kids were very interested in the research that she had to do in
order to write her science nonfiction books. It was a wonderful opportunity for the
students because they were able ask questions and learn more about what it is like to
be an author.
