2.0 Locate and Evaluate Resources and Sources:
Students will be able to follow and inquiry processes to identify, locate, evaluate, and select resources and
sources in a wide variety of formats to meet the information need in an ethical manner.
A. Locate and Evaluate Resources
Grades 6-8
Identify resources to meet the information need.
a. With guidance, explore and identify human, print, online, and multimedia resources.
b. With guidance, select resources based on subject, advantages and disadvantages of
various formats, availability and ease of access, and the information need.
6.0 Appreciate Literature and Life-long Learning:
Students will be able to demonstrate an appreciation of literature and multimedia as a reflection of human
experience and use the inquiry process for life-long learning. (AASL 21st4)
A. Appreciated Literature and Multimedia
Grades 6-8
1. Select literature and /or multimedia from the media center and other libraries for a personal
and/or assigned need.
a. Follow circulation procedures and policies in the media center and other libraries.
b. Locate and select literature and/or multimedia in a variety of genres.
Objective: Students will be able to search and locate the librarys resources using the online catalog Destiny in
order to use the library effectively.
Assessment: Students will complete a scavenger hunt with a partner. We will gather back as a group to review
answers.
Purpose of lesson: To demonstrate to students that they can independently access information before consulting
the librarian.
Materials Needed: LCD, computer, whiteboard or screen, handouts
Classes: Various English classes grades 6,7, and 8.
Procedures:
1) Introduce myself and state my expectations for appropriate use of the library. Discuss lunch pass
procedures and the hours the library is open. Discuss the layout of the library.
2) Have the students activate their prior knowledge by completing What do you remember? sheet (5
min). Then discuss answers.

3) Read objective and explain purpose of lesson.


4) Show Destiny and discuss:

How to access Destiny http://destiny.bcps.org

Tell them to click on Golden Ring Middle

Have a student volunteer to log-in

Show catalog and various ways (basic, power, visual, categories) to search for topics,
items, etc.

Show title details, Webpath Express, copies tab

5) Scavenger Hunt: Go over directions with students. Have them partner up and begin using the computers
for the scavenger hunt.
6) Call students back to go over answers. Have students come up and demonstrate their search. If time
doesnt permit, have the student talk the LMS through Destiny as he/she navigates.
7) Have students share with the group what they learned today. Collect scavenger hunts for English teacher
to give participation grade.
8) Early finishers: Complete the Challenge Paper. Or if time runs out, students can take challenge and
database password sheets home for extra practice.

The Challenge
Scenario: Science teacher, Mrs. Hohman, came in the
library
the other day. She walked over to the periodicals section and said, Mrs.
Venker, you dont subscribe to Current Science, do you? I replied, No, I do
not have a subscription to that periodical in printbutyou can find the
magazine Current Science on one of the BCPS databases.

Mrs. Hohman then told me she was looking for the Current Science issue
from 2001 and the particular article she wanted is called, The Body
Farm.
Your task: Figure out which BCPS database Mrs. Hohman needs to
use. Find the exact article shes requesting. On the back of this
paper, write down the database you used and the steps you
completed on the database to locate the article. Turn in this paper
into Mrs. Venker and you will get a special treat!!!!!
