4A Introduction
Ever seen penguins on TV or at the zoo? They can look pretty funny when they walk around
on their tiny legs. But these penguins dont want to fit in with the crowd. They want to be rock
stars.

4B Song Lyrics
Whos going to rock, rock, rock right now?
Whos going to get this party loud?
Whos going to dive, slip-slide right down?
Penguins! Yeah, we rock your town!
(x2)
Were from Antarctica, the bottom of the globe.
Better check the map, if you dont know.
Our land is all ice and snow,
And year round it stays icy cold.
Yeah, I mean like fifty below,
And we dont even need to wear a coat.
Cause were penguins; what do you know about us?
When we see fish, we go totally nuts.
We stick together like a team,
People who work together on something.
Yeah, we dive in the water, jump headfirst,
Were really good at it; nah, it doesnt hurt.
We swim in the ocean, a body of water
Thats salty and big. You know this kid!
Now you can seal an envelope if you lick it,
That will close it, but its wicked,
Cause seals are the animals who
Hunt penguins to make us their food!

To me, they look like dogs that swim,

Believe me, man, they are not our friends.
Theyre our enemies, the guys we fight,
Or run from and we dont like.
Its true we dont know how to fly,
But we know how to slip and slide.
Whos going to rock, rock, rock right now?
Whos going to get this party loud?
Whos going to dive, slip-slide right down?
Penguins! Yeah, we rock your town!
(x2)
Now we keep our balance, dont tip over,
When we march for days just like soldiers.
We walk with a steady step, OK?
Almost like we were in a parade.
One day we were marching as we do,
When we came upon something new.
It was a base, a fort for a navy,
Ummmor an army, maybe.
It was at the base of a hill, at the bottom,
My friends were with me, and I had taught them
To be as careful as foxes,
But there were no people there, only boxes
Stacked and put one on another,
In stacks or piles, and then my brother
Opened one of them to see what was inside.
When we saw, we were surprised.
Instruments! Not what a scientist uses,
Not tools for science, but for music.
Guitars, piano, and a drum set,
Violin, two tubas, and a trumpet.
We started to play; we were bad at first,
But we practiced, yeah, we had to work.
A few weeks later, we could rock a crowd,
So put your hands up and turn the track up loud!
Whos going to rock, rock, rock right now?
Whos going to get this party loud?
Whos going to dive, slip-slide right down?
Penguins! Yeah, we rock your town!

4H Reading

Read the passage below and then answer the questions that follow.

Threats to the Polar Bear

Polar bears live in the icy-cold Arctic. They are huge and powerful bears. Adult polar bears can
weigh as much as 1,700 pounds and can grow to be more than 10 feet tall. Some scientists think that
people are the polar bears worst enemy. Are you wondering how humans could do anything to hurt
this powerful animal? Well, when we dont take care of the planet, the Earths weather begins to
change. Polar bears need the ice and cold weather to survive.
A polar bears favorite food is a ringed seal. A polar bear will travel very far to find a seal. She will
march for many miles on the ice in search of food. When the polar bear finds some seals swimming,
she will stop and wait. Seals swim in the water below the ice, but they need to come up to take
breaths of air. They use holes in the ice called breathing holes to get air. A polar bear will find a place
close to a seals breathing hole and wait for a seal to pop up. Once the seal pops its head up, the
polar bear will attack! She will dive into the water and sink her sharp teeth into the seal. She kills the
seal and has a good meal.
But it may not be like this forever. The oceans are getting warmer. This is causing the ice to melt.
A polar bears home is the ice. When the ice melts, her home disappears. A polar bear needs ice to
hunt for seals. When the ice melts, it is very hard for polar bears to find seals. Many polar bears are

starving because the ice is melting.

Some of the things that we do every day
cause the Earths weather to change. There are
some small things that we can do to help prevent
climate change. If we take good care of the Earth,
we can help protect polar bears. For example,
we can walk or bike instead of taking cars. We
can recycle stacks of newspaper instead of just
throwing them in the trash. Small changes can
make a big difference to the polar bears and lots
of other animals, too.
1. Where do polar bears live?

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
2. How much can an adult polar bear weigh?

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
3. What is a polar bears favorite food?

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
4. How do polar bears hunt for food?

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
5. What can we do to help protect polar bears?
