Annotation
Written in a series of freeverse poems from a young
boy's point of view.

Limitations/Comments
There is a collection of poems that are referenced
throughout the book at the back. Great resource. A
wonderful mix of diary, free verse, and narrative. Grades
3-7.
Includes 7 art elements and It says Grade 1-6 but a lot of the projects, I would not do
over 100 projects with step- with students above the age of 8.

It's a YA read aloud fr sure.

A young ault trade book

that covers the Harlem
Renaissance in full detail. It
includes poetry, prose,
photographs, paintings, and
historical documents.
Age Range: 10-12 years; a
straightforward description
of the time period.
A perfect introduction to
Hughes' poetry. The poems
are paired with paintings by
Benny Andrews. 26 poems
in all that have been
carefully selected and
annotated by two
academics.

I was not able to use this with my 5th Grade students, but
it served as a great source of background knowledge
prepping for my unit.

This is the best piece of informational text that I could

find for the grade level. A lot of resources out there are
too advanced for 5th Grader students.
I used many poems from this selection because of their
appropriateness for 5th Grade students. Many of Hughes'
poems have language that I do not feel comfortable
teaching.

Romare Bearden speaks
about his use of imagery
and symbols in his collages.

I was not able to use it during my Unit but it is a grade

appropriate text that could be definitely be used by
students. They would enjoy the CHOICE they had in
writing the story.

Collection of 12 poems

This narrative tells the story
of those that journeyed
north in serach of
employment in the
industrial cities of the
North. Lawrence's panels
truly capture the emotions
of the struggles of so many
African Americans.
The poetic verse of
Langston Hughes is paried
with the visionary
illustrations of Bryan Collier.

I am using this as a reference book for my students

during their culminating project. They are emulating
Bearden's style while creating a collage of their own. It is
helpful to see so many reproductions of his work in one
place.

Anything by Walter Dean Myers

Short video that really explains why he uses symbols in

his collages.

I like this colleciton of poems for the depiction of a street

in Harlem. The pairings of pictures and poems really fit
well with my Unit.

I used this book to introduce the Great Migration. In

particular, Lawrence's Panel No.1.
