AIR SYSTEMS In order for air-powered tools to work their best. the ‘air supply system must be properly installed ‘and maintained regularly. The drawing shows a properly installed air supply. Handy checklists for installing and maintaining air supply systems follow. Indoor Air System Installation - Be certain that: All pipes supplying air have a large enough inside diameter (see table below the drawing). O The main pipe line slopes down, away ‘rom the compressor ('/y¢ inch per foot). Oi storage is provided along lengthy air lines. C Pipe tine branch outlets are at the top of the main pipe line. O cut-off valves are provided at each branch pipe line and throughout the system. Ol Water legs are extended from the bottom of each branch line. O Filter-regulator-iubricators that have @ pressure range of zero to 120 psi are installed on ell branch lines. Oi A refrigerant type dryer is installed on the system. O Air hoses are kept short. DA regular maintenance program is followed ‘The specifications for filter-regulator-lubricator units to supply enough air and protection for Paslode pneu- matic tools are as follows: Fikers, regulators and lubricators all to have minimum 3/¢ inch NPT port size, Filters to have 50 micron (or finer) elements, Regulators to allow regulated pressure from zero to 120 psi Lubricators to be of the type designed for a low or changing air flow. Outdoor Air System Installation - Be certain that: 1 A moisture trap is installed at the compressor. DA filter-reguiator-tubricator is installed at the compressor. Cir hoses and fitings are of large enough ciameter ‘so that, low is not restricted. (Minimum °/g inch 1D is required, with */2 inch ID used with eny hose fonger than 25 feet.) D Air hoses are no longer than 150 feet. Ci The system is properly lubricated on a regular ba- sis. (A regular maintenance program is followed. Example of Calculating Pipe Diameter plant has determined that it needs a 20 horsepower electric air compressor. This size will supply approxi mately 80 CFM of compressed air at approximately 120 psi. Because of the distance between the com- pressor and work areas, the length of the main pipe line will be approximately 360 feet. ‘See the table below the drawing. The minimum size main pipe needed is 11/, inches. CUT-OFF VALVE. CO Water legs, filters and air lines are drained daily (if they are not automatically drained) CO Air lines are cleared, especially in winter, to pre- vent freezing. The lubricator is working properly and has an ade- quate supply of oil. O The filter element is cleaned (out) every six months. Ci Only regulated air is being used and each regula- tor Is operating properly. O The lubricator is filled with Paslode pneumatic too! lubricating oil, Part No. 096291 Air Consumption Use the Air Consumption Chart when figuring CFM re- quirements for the tool. Paslode tools are designed to operate efficiently at between 80 and 120 psi and should never be operated at pressure exceeding 120 psi. This chart will help you find the correct compres- sor size that will quickly replenish the too! housing’s air pressure within these ranges. To use the chart you will need to know how many tools will be used and an estimate of how many fasteners will be driven per minute by each tool. The chart is based on the equation of: (CFM = Number of tools x average fasteners driven each minute per tool x safety factor (always 1.2) x air consumption at given air pressure Example: Ten tools at 30 fasteners each per minute, with a safety factor of 1.2 OFM = 10 x 30 x 1.2 x .040 (@ 100 psi) CFM = 14.4 Using the Air Consumption Chart and figuring that the tools wil be operated at 100 psi, we can find after ‘making the proper calculations that a compressor providing 15 CFM of air is required. Since four CFM of air is produced by approximately one horsepower, a ‘compressor with four to five horsepower can be rec- ‘ommended. AIR CONSUMPTION CHART 085 035 [AIR CONSUMPTION - SCFM/FASTENER g 030 7 8 9 10 110 120 AIR PRESSURE - PSIG TOOL INSTALLATION Your Paslode tool comes to you ready for immediate use and can be installed by following these steps: 1. SAFETY - All tool operators and their immediate supervisors must become familiar with the opera- tor safety instructions before operating the tool. These instructions are contained on‘page two of this manual. 2. Included with each tool is one copy of this Operat- ing Manual. Be sure to keep this information for future reference. An Ownership Registration Card is also included. The card must be com- pleted and returned to Paslode immediately to register your ownership. 3. A plastic cap has been placed in the air inlet of the tool. This cap must be removed. TOOL INSTALLATION — Continued 4. A male quick-disconnect air fitting must be in- stalled at the air inlet of the tool. The fitting must be a pneumatic type which discharges the air from the tool when it is disconnected. 5. Install a_fiter-regulator—lubricator unit, with gauge, as close as possible to the tocl, prefer- ably within ten feet. Refer to the Air Systems Checklist section for the required length and di- ameter of hose used between the filter-regulator “lubricator unit and the tool- 6. In general, no other special installation is re- quited; however, for easier handling and ‘operation of the tool you may want to include the following recommendations: ‘a. If the operator is working at a bench or table, is usually easier to feed the airline from un- derneath the bench. b. A small tray can be fastened under the bench top to hold the tool when not in use. The same tray can also hold the fastener sup: ply. If this toot daes not work when it is first con- nected, do not try to take it apart to make repairs. Please call your Paslode Represertative immedi: ately. TOOL OPERATION Loading A warns A Keep the tool pointed in a safe direction. Disconnect the tool from air supply and remove all fasteners. Step No. 1 - Pull back follower unti it latches at the ‘end of the magazine. The rail cover will automatically open. Step No. 2 ~ Insert fastener strip into magazine rail Step No. 3 ~ Press follower latch release button and, slide follower forward until it contacts the fastener strip. Step No. 4 - The tool is now ready for use. Operation ‘The trigger of the 3250/65-F16 nailer is interlocked with the tool’s work contacting element so that the od} will not operate unless the work contacting ele- ment is depressed. To assure thet each nail penetrates to the same depth, be sure that (1) the air pressure to the tool remains constant (regulator is installed and working properly), and (2) the tool is always held firmly against the workpiece. ‘The tool will rebound slightly after driving a nail, so. do ‘not position yourself directly over the tool, or extend your reach to the extent that your footing is not se- cure. TOOL OPERATION — Continued Precision Placement Driving Grasp the handle and hold the bottom of the work contacting element firmly against the workpiece until it is completely depressed. Squeeze the trigger to drive the fastener, then release the trigger. To drive another fastener, lift the tool from the workpiece and repeat this procedure. Successive (Bounce) Driving To operate the tool in this mode, grasp the handle firmly, squeeze the trigger and move the tool along the workpiece with a bouncing motion, depressing the work contacting element at the points where you ‘want to insert a fastener. To repeat this driving mode, keep the trigger depressed and continue to bounce the work contacting element against the workpiece. ‘As soon as the desired number of fasteners have been driven, release the tool trigger to avoid uninten- tional fastener discharge. Sequential Operation When the sequential operating kit is installed on this tool, the operator must follow a specific series of steps that are repeated each time the tool drives a fastener. The work contacting element must be de- pressed and then held against the work surface before the trigger is pulled. After each fastener has been driven, the trigger must be completely released and the tool lifted from the work surface before the fastener driving sequence can be repeated. Special Instructions Air pressure at the tool must not exceed 120 psi. MAINTENANCE ‘The Paslode model 3250-F'16 too! is built for ease of maintenance. A few simple details will assure trou- ble-free operation and long tool life. Anyone who uses or maintains this tool must read the safety and ‘maintenance instructions. Study the schematic draw- ing in this manual before starting any repairs on the tool. Air-operated tools must be inspected periodically and worn or broken parts must be replaced to keep the tool operating safely and efficiently. Also, the items appearing in the Maintenance Chart shouid be checked often. Cold Weather Care When temperatures are below freezing, tools should be kept warm by any convenient, SAFE method. If this is not possible, the following procedure should be used to warm up the tool parts 1. Reduce the regulated pressure to 30 p: 2, Remove all fasteners from the tool. 3. Connect an air line and blank fire the tool. The lowered air pressure will be enough to free-fire the tool. Slow speed operation tends to warm up the moving parts. Slowing up the piston helps the bumper and the “O” rings to become springy. NEVER free-fire your tool at high pressure, 4. Once the tool is warmed up, readjust the regula- tor to the proper working pressure and reload the toot. Tool operators who must work outdoors or in un- heated areas in extremely cold temperatures should ‘also do the following things to prevent moisture freeze-up in hoses, tools and compressors. 1. Use a No. 5 or No. 10 non-detergent oil in the lubricator, such as: Guif Oil Corp. ——~Terresstic No. 43 Shell Oil Co. “Tellus No. 27 Standard Oil Co. Standard Industrial No. 15 Mobil Oil -DTE-LT If required, fill lubricators with an ethylene glycol base anti-freeze and oil the tool manually. This is done to prevent moisture within the air lines and tools from freezing. However, if this should be- come necessary, DO NOT use a sealant type anti-freeze. 2. Once a week, depending upon the amount of tool, use, take the tool apart and wash away any sludge with safety solvent to keep tools operating efficiently. NEVER USE KEROSENE OR FLAMMA- BLE SOLVENTS TO CLEAN THE TOOL, IMPORTANT: Cleaning an air-operated tool with solvents removes the thin coating of grease applied to the piston wall and “O" rings at the fac- tory. To replace this coating of grease on the cylinder wall and the “O" rings, use Lubriplate GR-132, Part No. 401049, 3. Once a day, open the petcock on the air com- Pressor tank to drain any moisture in extremely cold or humid weather. A few ounces of ant: freeze in the tank will keep the air free of frost. Following these steps can help to prevent the me- chanical problems caused by cold weather. e MAINTENANCE — Continued Testing the Tool after Servicing After replacing any pert or parts, it is important to ‘check the too! for proper operation. This ensures that the tool was put together correctly, is safe to use, nd will perform the job properly. Use the checklist below when testing a tool after repair. C All hardware is securely fastened. CO The work contacting element is installed. CO The work contacting element is in the proper pos tion with the trigger, and both parts move freely. C1 The magazine is propery attached. TI The required safety information on the tool is leg- ible. C Amato air fitting is securely connected to the tool. CO The proper Paslode fasteners for the application, are inserted into the magazine of the tool, The tool is connected to an air supply that has an air pressure gauge and the air pressure is no greater than the maximum pressure marked on the tool. 1 the too! is tested by driving fasteners into material that is identical to the type used in the actual appli- cation, 1 The toot operating instructions in this manual are followed. O During testing, the tool is checked for air leaks and the proper sequence of operation. Also, that all fasteners are driven to the same depth (provided, the air pressure remains the same and the tool is, pressed firmly against the workpiece) Tool Lubrication It is most important that the tool be properly lubri- cated. This is done by keeping the air line lubricator filled and correctly adjusted. Without proper lubrica- tion, the tool will not work properly and parts will wear prematurely. Use the proper oil in the lubricator. The lubricator should be of the low airflow or changing air flow type, and should be kept filled with the proper oll. Use only Paslode recommended lubricants. Substitutes may be excellent oils, but may harm the rubber com- pounds used in the tool “O" rings and other rubber parts. Paslode selis pneumatic tool lubricating oil which can be ordered under Part No, 098291. This oil is espe- cially made for pneumatic operation. A filter-regulator-tubricator should always be in- cluded in the system. if a lubricator is not available, the tool should be lubricated at least once a day with 20 drops of oil directly through the air inlet in the tool housing. 10 ACTION Drain air line filter (daily). MAINTENANCE — Continued MAINTENANCE CHART WHY Prevent accumulation of moisture and dirt HOw Open manual petcack (most air supply systems have such a valve). Keep lubricator filled. Keep tools lubricated. with Paslode pneumatic too! lubricant, Part No. 096291. Clean fitter element — then blow air through filter in direction ‘opposite to normal flow. Prevent clogging of fiter with dirt, Wash with soap and water or follow manufacturer's instructions. Check that all screws on tool are tight. Prevent air leakage and promote efficient tool operation. Check screws daily. Keep work contacting element working properly. Promote operator safety and efficient toot operation. Blow clean daily. Keep magazine and feeder mechanism clean. Prevent jamming of fasteners. Blow clean daily. Lubricate “O” rings that are replaced, Assure long life and proper ‘operation of tool. Use Lubriplate GR-132 grease, Part No. 401049. Use only Paslode replacement parts. Keep tool operating efficiently and maintain Paslode tool warranty. Order any replacement parts needed from Paslode Dealer. ® OPERATOR TROUBLESHOOTING Most minor problems can be resolved quickly and easily using the table below. If problems persist, contact your Paslode Dealer for assistance. PROBLEM CORRECTIVE ACTION Fasteners will not drive completely into wood. Increase air pressure (do not exceed 120 psi). Fasteners penetrate properly during normal operation, but won't drive fully at faster speeds. Increase air flow to tool — use larger air lines @/g inch 1D minimum). Fasteners drive too deeply into wood. Reduce air pressure. Fastener jams in nose of tool. Open front guide latch, release jammed fastener, and close latch securely. Tool skips during operation — no fasteners are driven from time-to-time. Check magazine for proper fasteners. Magazine follower should slide freely. Clean as needed to remove debris. Make sure correct fasteners are being used. Use fasteners that mest Paslode specifications only. Tool operates, but no fasteners are driven. Check magazine for proper fasteners. Open front guide latch and check for jams or debris. Clear as necessary. Air leaks at cap when tool is connected to air. Tighten capscrews. 12 ACCESSORIES Sequential Operating Kit ‘This special attachment is design- ed for sequential operation. The op- erator must depress and hold the work contacting element against the work surface before pulling the trig ger. This sequence must be repeat- fed each time the tool drives a fas- tener.
