1. What is the purpose of Form W-4?

6. Government Go to the Department of Labor's web site at www.dol.gov and
review the information provided there. What are at least 3 things on the site that
you did not know about before? (just a short description and what it is that you
didnt know about but you were able to find out about from the website.) The
Department of Labor is a Federal Department. Check out the State of Michigan
website too and do the same thing there. http://www.michigan.gov/ (any three
items from the state website)

Work Laws and Responsibilities: Solve Problems and Explore Issues

9. Your friend Eric believes that the amount of wages he received during the year
is different from the amount listed on the W-2 he received from his employer. He
asks you what to do. How would you reply?
I would advise him to look at his pay stubs from all of his checks, which are
important to keep, and add it up. Also, to talk to his employer about it.
11. Bianca, age 14, has decided that she wants to work part time this summer
doing whatever kind of work she can find to earn money to buy clothes. Explain to

her what things she should do to prepare for work. Also explain what forms she
may have to complete when she begins work.
Bianca must fill out the Michigan combined offer of employment and work
permit certificate, and age certificate CA-6 for minors under the age of 16.

13. Aaron, who has a visual disability, applied for a position as an assistant credit
manager at a local retail store. The store's human resource manager tested
Aaron's eyesight by having him read a chart written in small print. Aaron failed
the test and, on that basis alone, was rejected for the position. Have Aaron's
employment rights been violated? Explain your answer and discuss any pertinent
laws.
I believe Aarons employment rights have been violated because a company
can not reject your employment because of a disability, when you actually do
have the sets of skills that are required.

14. You work as a sales associate in a retail store. Your manager is always
stressing the importance of total customer satisfaction. What do you think this
expression means? Do you believe it is wise for a business to adopt this
expression as policy?
I think total customer satisfaction means to be helpful, caring, nice, and
have all of the qualities that you would like to see as a customer. Yes, I believe it is
wise for a business to adopt this expression as a policy. It looks better for the
business.

15 Ethics A sales associate at a home entertainment electronics store works on
commission, which means his salary is based on the amount of sales he makes.
He is assisting a customer who wants to buy a new plasma TV. After talking with
the customer, he knows there are several models with various prices that would
satisfy the customer's needs. However, he persuades the customer to buy the
higher-priced model. Why do you think the sales associate did this? Was this fair
to the customer? What ethical issues are involved when pay is directly tied to
sales?
The sale associate persuaded the customer to buy the higher priced
television because his salary is based on the sales he makes; He obviously did this
so he could make more money, which is what anyone would do. Everyone needs
income and the more money he can make the better.
