Soccer Bowling
Grade 3 | Target Games Indoors

Learning Goals

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

demonstrate behaviours and apply procedures to maximize safety

use the simple tactics of proximity, force and aim to successfully send a variety of objects to a target using
a kicking motion.

Facility

Gymnasium

Safety Requirements

Refer to the Ontario Physical Education Safety Guidelines - Elementary Curricular Module, Movement
Activities for Primary Grades activity page.

Warm-Up

Students will gradually increase their heart rate by participating in the following activity.

Mirror with a Ball

Divide students into pairs, and give each student a ball.

The students move around the room slowly. One partner is the leader and the other student mirrors the
leaders movements with the soccer ball.
The students practice kicking/dribbling the ball around the space while maintaining control of the ball.
Students switch roles.

Minds On

Share and clarify the lesson Learning Goals with the students. Have students predict what they will be
doing based on the Learning Goals.
Using group discussion, students identify Success Criteria for accurately sending objects to a target by
kicking.
Teacher reviews the three phases of kicking with control:
Preparation

Body faces target.

Step beside ball with support (non-kicking) foot, planting it firmly on the ground.

Execution

Keep your eyes in the direction in which you want the ball to travel.
Ankle firm (no floppy feet) when contacting ball.
Strike the ball with the instep of the foot.
Lean backwards into the kick.

Follow-Through

Kicking leg follows through across body.

Use arms for balance.
Kicking leg swings freely with foot toward the target.

Review the simple ways students might vary proximity, force and aim to increase their chances of
success in hitting their targets.

A&E - Minds On

Teacher observation with anecdotal writing of students ability to demonstrate knowledge of kicking
skills and strategies using Teacher Resource 7: Sending Skills (Kicking with Control) Rubric

Action

Soccer Bowling

Set up 10 stations, where each station consists of one pylon placed six metres away from a marked line,
and 4 bowling pins placed around each pylon (about one foot away from the pylon).
Divide students into pairs.
Students take turns kicking a soccer or utility ball at the pins and pylon, from the marked line (about six
metres from the pylon).
Students try to kick the pins down first, then attempt to kick the pylon down.
Students count how many times they are successful in kicking down all pins and the pylon after 10 kicks.
Repeat activity, with the students goal being to improve their score.
Focus of the activity should be on increasing heart rate while using various locomotor skills.

Teacher moves through the space giving individual students descriptive feedback for aim and accuracy.

A&E - Action

Teacher observation with feedback of students application of safe behaviours and application of
kicking skills and strategies using Teacher Resource 7: Sending Skills (Kicking with Control) Rubric

Cool-Down

Students gradually decrease their heart rate to a resting rate by participating in the activity below.
Students should also stretch the body parts that have been active throughout the lesson. See
Appendix for stretches.

Arm Swing (Range of Motion activity)

Students walk slowly around the room while doing the following:

Swing arms slowly forward and back.

Swing arms in front of body.
Swing arms over head.

Consolidation

Students use the Thumbs-Up Strategy (see Appendix) to self-assess their ability to obtain the lesson
Learning Goals. Review Learning Goals with students and what those goals would have looked like
based on the Success Criteria.

A&E - Consolidation

Teacher observation of students responses to self-assessment of the Success Criteria for Sending
Objects to a Target by kicking, using the Thumbs-Up Strategy (see Appendix)

Ideas for Extension

Wall Kick

Have students kick the ball against the wall for 2 . 3 minutes, practising the fundamentals of kicking with
control.

Have students participate in a Soccer Bowling tournament where teams of two challenge other teams.

Next Steps

Students will continue to develop their knowledge of sending objects to a target by kicking, making
note of proximity, force and aim.

Notes to Teacher

Remind students that they should remain aware of other students' positions and not kick a ball towards a
target if anyone is between them and the target.
