Primary Curriculum (content) Area: Dramatic Play

Learning Opportunity Name: Vet Prop Box
Brief description/type: Children will be able to explore items vets may use during the day to expand their knowledge and
to give them hands on experiences as a vet.
WHO Its For: Three to Four 5 or 6 year olds
List specific accommodations/adaptions: For children that spend too much time at one area I would add a variety of different
materials. For children that spend very little time at the area, I would get rid of some choices so there were select few items
for them to use so its not overwhelming. If the area gets too noisy, I would put a number limit on the area smaller than what is
already determined.
WHY-Rationale:
The children have shown interest in animals and how to care for them after reading about veterinarians. They have also
been curious on what else a vet does while he or she is working.
Objective(s): By participating in this opportunity, the children will

Gain vocabulary
Use fine motor skills

Be involved in social interactions and communication

HOW to Teach:
Introduction (How will the children be involved in the planning & preparation of this center?):
Teaching steps (What is available to children? How many can work there at a time? Is there a time limit? Will all children get a
chance to work in the center today? Share any limitations, expectations, or safety concerns.):
1. I would ask the children what they thinkg a vet would have in its office and what they use on a daily basis. After
hearing their thoughts, I would bring in some of the things they listed and then bring in other things they didnt list or
didnt think of.
2. I would have 3 to 4 children at this area at a time for 15 minutes or until they lost interest
3. I would like to have each child be able to experience the vet area in the same day as everyone else.
4. Some safety concerns I have would be misuse of athletic tape and the tweezers.
Closure & Transition:

It is getting close to pick up time, I would like you to start thinking about picking up your items and you will be able to continue
with this tomorrow. Once you have started picking up your items, think about what you are going to write in your journal about
the area you played in today. After you have picked up your items, please get your journal out.
