Our primary research involved an agency trip to the Hotel Pattee to better understand
our clients business and clients needs. Our trip to the hotel proved very beneficial in
our planning process. The visit showed our team members just how distinctive this
hotel was with uniquely themed rooms and original artwork. Our team felt that the hotel
was a destination in itself. We also took from this trip that special events could be a
successful form of profit for the Hotel Pattee. Mr. Hartz explained that he had booked a
couple of business retreats before our visit and would be interested in increasing this
form of profit. Mr. Hartz showed us one of his rooms available for a business retreat
although the hotel offers several rooms that would suit different business retreat needs.
Mr. Hartz explained that all rooms have anything a business would look for in terms of
technology in the conference rooms. The hotel also offers catering services through
Chef Chris Caes. Next Hotel Pattees owner showed our team the Spring Valley
Ballroom. Although this room could be used for different purposes, the most obvious
event that would be held here are wedding receptions. The Spring Valley Ballroom can
hold a wedding of up to 160 people and also features a wall-length mural of the history
of the city. Mr. Hartz showed us a couple of the guest rooms in the hotel that features
unique dcor, spacious rooms, and luxurious bathrooms. Our team believes that the
perfect strategy to get heads in those beds is to fill the guest rooms with guests from
special event activities such as business retreats and weddings.
Survey
The Agency also performed a survey to better understand our target market comprised
of those searching for a space for their special event. Our team sent out a survey to
fellow students, family, and friends to better understand what people look for in a hotel
and more specifically special event spaces. Our survey received 21 responses. We
were hoping for a few more responses but decided this was significant enough to
include in our plan. The majority of our respondents were aged 18-24 or 40 and older.
We also had more females respond to our survey than males (This may be more
indicative of brides views rather than business owners). Our survey also examined
whether our respondents were married or single. Eight respondents were single while
11 were married.
Please rank the following factors in order of importance to you when choosing a
hotel to stay in: (1 being the most important)
The next question was particularly interesting to the team members. This question
asked respondents to rank factors in order of importance when choosing a hotel. The
factors were price, location, amenities, uniqueness, cleanliness, customer service, and
travel site review score. The factors of price and location were tied for the most
important factor position. The two factors that were ranked least important were travel
review site score and uniqueness. These responses were not exactly what we were
hoping for due to the uniqueness of the hotel and the impeccable travel review site
scores that the Hotel Pattee has.
Approximately how long would you be willing to spend traveling to a special
event that is being held at a hotel? (such as a wedding reception, business
retreat, birthday party, holiday party, etc.
The next question inquired how long the respondents would be willing to travel for a
special event such as a wedding reception or business retreat. About 47 percent of
respondents answered that they would be willing to travel 2 hours or more for a special
event. Our team was pleasantly surprised by this outcome, as we were worried that
location may be an issue when customers were searching for a special event venue.
If you were organizing a special event to be held at a hotel, (aside from price)
what accommodations would appeal most to you for the venue/room where the
event is being held?
Our seventh question asked respondents what qualities they look for in a special event
venue. The top three factors were size, food and beverage options and adaptability. Our
team was pleased with this result, as we believe these factors are strengths of the Hotel
Pattee.

Current Brand
The Hotel Pattee is elegant, but also inviting, cozy, unique, and unexpected. The Hotel
Pattee is adventurous and full of surprises but relaxing and an escape.
Local Support
Perrys website has little to no mention of the recent remodel of the hotel or anything
about the hotel at all for that matter. However they are currently doing a multi million
dollar downtown rework which can help draw people to the city and that means more
people staying at the hotel.

Yelp.com also has a page for Hotel Pattee. They are given a 4.5/5 star
rating on this website. Again some of the reviews are from before
remodeling and under different ownership. This website does not have
any photos of the updated hotel and the photos are those taken by guests.
Almost every review for the Hotel Pattee on their website have been 5/5.
Hotel Pattee received a Certificate of Excellence for 2013 from Trip
Advisor. The reviewers seem very passionate about this place, loving the
different themes for the rooms. The owner does a nice job of responding
to the posts on this review site. Most of the reviewers recommend this
hotel for couples and romance.

The Hotel Pattee website is constantly being updated. Not so many new pictures being
added, however, new parts of the website go up what seems like everyday. Jay blogs about
once every two weeks, giving a nice update about what is going on at the hotel. You can
also buy dinner tickets and a concert or get tips about planning your event at the Hotel
Pattee. And you can buy reservations on the website as well.

Industry Analysis
The competition for the Hotel Pattee includes any other
hotels in the Des Moines area as well as any wedding
venues in the area. The hotel industry is mainly a chain
industry, dominated by chain hotels, such as Best Western
or Marriott. And while chains can be the cheaper options in a
lot of towns, you lose the uniqueness of your stay. The Hotel
Pattee has that uniqueness that you might be looking for and
as a result can be more desirable option in small town Iowa.
Wedding venues are elegant and desirable. However they
are often independent from any other pieces of the wedding
day (such as the hotel) the Hotel Pattee puts the wedding
venue and the hotel under one elegant and fancy roof.
