Students will be able to:

1. Interpret information on an exploration map by identifying the legend, voyage routes, and its correlation to a present day map
2. Critically analyse primary sources by identifying the intentions of the writers or artists
3. Write a summary paragraph on the textbook section Cartier Explores the Coast including an opening statement, key points,
and a closing statement.

1. A. I can identify each of Cartiers voyage routes to New France by referring to the legend on the map
B. I can name the present day provinces along Cartiers voyage routes

2. I can examine and gather extra information about a painting of a Mikmaq camp by answering critical questions
3. I can write a summary paragraph about Cartiers exploration of New France.

Write a summary paragraph for the section Cartier Explores the Coast on pages 15-18.
1. Include important information only (use the headings to help you)
2. Include an opening and closing statement
3. Ensure that all grammar and sentence structure is correct.
4. Make sure the summary is substantially shorter than the original
5. About half a page in length
- Peers will read your paragraph and complete a Summary Checklist next class as a review for todays class.
- Will be handed in for assessment and feedback, and will count toward homework completion mark.

Opening Statement: A sentence describing the topic.


Body of the paragraph: Important points of the reading.
Closing Statement: Relating to the opening statement, but in different words .
