Instructional Procedures
Focusing Event: The class will first review the importance of spacing between
words. They will be asked about punctuation and why periods are crucial to
writing. Using the example book, the students will be introduced to the concept of
matching illustrations to the words that they write. The example book will
visually reinforce this principle.
Teaching/ Learning Procedures:
1. The students will first engage in a mini-lesson regarding spacing,
punctuation, and matching illustrations to text.
2. Once they understand the concept, the students will disperse and find a
comfortable spot in the room to begin writing their stories about winter.

3. The teacher will walk around and conference with individual students
about their strengths and weaknesses and answer any questions that they
have.
4. When students are finished writing, or when time is up, bring them back
together and allow for sharing time.
Formative Check (ongoing or specific): Have the students read their
stories, or pages that they created, and ask them if their sentences have
spaces, punctuation, and if the text matches the illustrations. This will
check for understanding.
Reteach (alternative used as needed): I will create charts to visually show
the students what I expect of them. I will also demonstrate examples with
the class while they are together in a whole group to make sure they
understand what I expect of them.
Closure: Each child will have the opportunity to share their winter books to the
class and will be able to enjoy positive feedback from their classmates.
Assessment/Summative Evaluation: I will look at their books and read what they wrote. I
will check to see if they have correct spacing and punctuation, as well as pictures
matching text.
