University of North Texas

Art Education

I. Lesson Number, Grade Levels, Title, and Duration:

Lesson #2, Grade levels: 10-12, Makin that paper! Duration: 2 class sessions
II. Lesson Rationale: The purpose of this lesson will be to inform students what they will be doing
with their homemade paper: creating a journal for them to record thoughts and sketches throughout the
remainder of the unit, along with creating paper to be used in their final project. I want students to
successfully complete the remainder of steps required to make their paper during this class session, so
that by the next session they will be ready to create their journals. Students will continue exploring
artists, and art genres that work with the concepts of focus. This lesson will be especially significant in
deepening their understanding of consumption/materialism. Through their paper making processes, the
students will they gain a new appreciation for something that is a mindless consumer good, often used
in context with advertisements, promoting consumption.
III. Key Concepts:
There are variations of consumption: affluence, conspicuous consumption, overconsumption,
and profligate consumption.
Notions of materialism/ consumption affect quality of life perceptions.
IV. Essential Question:
How are the products and resources we consume actually produced? Where do they come from
and who makes them? What happens to products when we are finished with them?
What is progress? Wealth? Prosperity? Well-being? How are these measured?
What are impacts of the processes of production on the environment, society, and individuals?
V. Lesson Objectives:
Students will successfully perform making their homemade papers, for the purpose of
progressing into later projects by completing the remaining steps in the first session of lesson 2.
Students will utilize a sheet of their homemade paper by constructing individual journals during
second session in lesson 2.

IX. Instruction and Its Sequencing:
Day of the Lesson :1st day
1. Introduction/Motivation:
The students will be excited for this lesson once I inform them that we will spending this first
class session outside to make our papers.
2. Guided Practice
Before allowing students to immediately begin creating their papers, I will facilitate a class
demo on how they will proceed with the paper making process once outside.
3. Independent Practice
Within their groups, students will take turns making their sheets of paper from their assigned
bucket of pulp. I will be able to gauge their understanding by how successfully they accomplish
the final steps during class.
4. Closure
Once the class has placed their papers/screens on the appropriate drying rack, I will facilitate a
short class discussion over how they felt about the processes completed, while relating back to
some of the guided questions until class is dismissed.
5. Formative Evaluation
If any of the students fall behind in making their paper sheets, I will allow for them to complete
the final processes during the next class session, but points will be taken off. Based on
participation during our class discussions, I will be able to recognize if students are
constructing knowledge for themselves in relationship to the objectives.
6. Classroom Management Procedures
Make sure that all of the students have seen my demo.
IX. Instruction and Its Sequencing:
Day of the Lesson :2nd day
1. Introduction/Motivation:
The students will be shown an example of a journal created with a piece of the paper created
from the 1st class session. A table filled with different threads, beads, interior journal papers
they can use will be at the front of the classroom so they can immediately begin making their
journals.
2. Guided Practice
I will allow for the students to research online (during the beginning of class) different ways
they can bind or create the journals while utilizing their created paper.
3. Independent Practice
Students will be given the duration of the class session to finish their journals, and will be
required to take them home to finish if unable to in class. If a student finishes with some time to
spare, I will require them to answer at least of the essential questions (written on the board for
them) in their journals.
4. Closure

As the class session is winding to an end, I will tell students to begin putting away their
materials, and announce that the journals must be taken home to be completed by next class
along with a response in their journals to anywhere from 2-5 of the Guided Questions.
5. Formative Evaluation
If any of the students fall behind in making their journals, I will allow for them to complete the
final processes at home, no points will be taken off. Based on participation during our class
discussions I will be able to recognize if students are constructing knowledge for themselves in
relationship to the objective.
6. Classroom Management Procedures
Make sure that all of the students have seen my demo.
X. Summative Assessment and Evaluation:
The students will be assessed upon completing their paper making, and again upon completing their
journals.
