Document-Based Essay

The Meiji Restoration took place in Japan following the

arrival of American naval officer Matthew Perry in 1853. Seeing
how far behind the rest of the world they had fallen, the japanese
government began a program of Westernization, Modernization,
industrialization and imperialism. The impact of the Meiji
Restoration on the world is Isolation and Imperialism.
Some of the other impacts of meiji restoration on the world
was Imperialism. Imperialism is a policy of extending a countrys
power and influence through diplomacy or military force. Japan
once isolated itself from all the other countries, after years of
practicing isolationism they got tired of it and decided to get with
other countries. Japan fought in a war with Russia and China
because they wanted to take over korea, japan won the war and
took over korea. The rest of the world was shocked because they
never expect that japan would win a war from russia or china
because these both countries are very powerful. The Japanese
people changes the korean language into japanese. In the
Document #1 in the name of assimilation, korean language
instruction was first simply discouraged while the movement for
the use of japanese in 1938 it was abolished in all public school.
This evidence proves that korean language has been changed by
the japanese. The japanese people changed their language
because they took over them so they wanted those people to be
just like the japanese so they forced them to learn japanese and
speak that language. This was important because they took over
them and they were controlling those people and they were told to
do certain things.

Others impact of Meiji Restoration on the world have also

been from Imperialism. Japan took over korea because they had
a lot of power so they wanted to take control of korean country.
Research also shows that japan has also changed the korean
education system. In Document #3 it says that on august 1911 it
stated that the purpose of the education in korea was to produce
loyal and obedient and useful subjects of the japanese emperor.
It adopted a system of four-year primary education, a four-year
secondary school program for boys, and a three-year secondary
curriculum for girls. This evidence shows that japan has changed
the korean education system. The Japanese wanted loyal and
obedient students because they didnt want them to think they
were doing anything wrong to them and they didnt want those
students to think or to fight over them.
Some of the other impacts of Meiji Restoration in the world were
from the Korean Declaration of independence we can also tell that
korea has changed under the japanese rule by Document #4. It
says in the document #4 How much of our right to life has been
plundered? How much of our spiritual progress has been barred?
How much of our honor and dignity have been violated? And how
much of our opportunity to contribute to the cultural progress of
the world without new visions and creativity has been lost? This
evidence proves the claim how much korea have had changed
under the japanese rule and all the things they faced.
Impacts of the Meiji Restoration on the world are also from
both Isolation and Imperialism. Japan had more power and
wanted to took over korea and control them, but i think that
imperialism is not fair at all because we cant just go into a
country and tell them to change their language, cultural, traditions,

and religion because the people have had been practicing their
customs since they were born and its totally unfair to them and
just to go up to and tell them to change everything they have been
doing for years. This information tells us how one country can
change other country and take over them by reading the
document #4 we can all know that how bad and unfair and
forceful imperialism is they have killed thousand of people in war,
they forced people to changed what they have been practicing for
years and learn new customs, language. For me this whole idea
of imperialism is unuseful and unfair by this information we learn
that people in the past have gone through and a lot and thats why
we see many customs of ones country in others.
