NAME:____________________________________
In preparation for our AP Lit Socratic seminar on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 on the themes in The House on
Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. Please answer the following questions and find quotes to support your
answers. Some themes to incorporate in discussion: identity, community/neighborhood, freedom/growth, fitting
in, coming of age, and home/belonging.
This worksheet will be collected on 2/25 and is worth up to 15 points. Seminar participation is worth 15 points
total as well.
1. Examine Esperanzas inner self. Why does Esperanza struggle with being content
on Mango Street and being thankful for what she has? Why is she so conflicted all
the time? Explain your answer.
6. Describe the transition from childhood to adolescence. What are the dangers and
pitfalls of this transition? Do you face any of these dangers as a teenager in
todays society?
7. What was your favorite vignette? Why was this your favorite piece from the book?
What lessons or themes stand out from this piece?
8. The vignettes in The House on Mango Street seem disjointed and random at times.
How does this style mimic the neighborhood where Esperanza lives?
9. At the end of the book, Esperanza visits Lucy and Rachels house to pay
condolences to their deceased baby sister. While she was there she met three
women, whom she thought were witches, who prophesized her future. From this
experience, Esperanza learned that she cannot run away from who she is. You will
always be Mango Street. You cant erase what you know. You cant forget who you
are (105). How does this relate to you?
10.Create a question of your own to discuss with your classmates. As always, your
questions should be thought-provoking and require evidence from the text.
