Researchers in the U.S.

and Australia led by jenna Jambeck, an environmental engineer at the university of

Georgia, calculated the share that each of 192 countries could have contributed to plastic waste in the oceans. They
found that between 4.8 million and 12.7 million tons of discarded bottles, bags, straws, packaging and other items
ended up in the worlds oceans.
They estimated that people living along the coast of Indonesia, the worlds fourth-most-populous nation, generated
about 3.22 million tons of mismanaged plastic waste in 2010, about 10% of the world total. Of that, between 0.48
million and 1.29 million metric tons ended up as marine waste.
The U.S. ranked 20th by the researchers estimates and responsible for 1% of mismanaged ocean trash in the
world. This means that it is not about how many people are living along the coast of a country. More important is
how responsible is the government in preventing plastic waste to be scattered in the ocean.
I believe the Indonesian government is doing what they have to do regarding the disposal of their plastic waste.
Apparently, they failed to make a disposal and recycling system suitable for their population. Being one of the most
populous country in the world, it is also a big task to accommodate all the plastic waste. I can say that the answer
is innovation on their waste management. With this age of technology, there is always a way to recycle better
when it comes to plastic.
Also, It is important to Improve the awareness of their citizens regarding recycling. If more people are aware of
where and how can they properly dispose the plastic, less waste will be scattered in the ocean.
