Overall to Motivate
- Theme based curriculum
- focus on literacy and numeracy
- have high expectations of the students and believe in their ability to learn
- Very important to get to know the students
each group of students is different
- They require lots of communication and reasonable standards, while still maintaining
expectations
- very visual (avoid having them write things down)
for example, posters
- adjust lessons to account for students strengths, and then push them outside of their comfort
zones
- Interested in current events and trends in the media (relevance)
- have fun with them
- benefit from
small steps, routine
Avoid
- heavily weighted evaluation
leads to anxiety
- place low emphasis on one-time attempts at success
- note taking for long periods of time
low fine motor skills leads to frustration and behavioural issues among students

In Science
- hands on activities
Labs, POEs
- relevance to students lives
current events in science
- organizers and visual representations
bubble maps, word walls, charts
- assessment
posters and labs
allowing multiple opportunities to succeed
