Domain 3a Explanations of Content

I. Content and Standards:

S4.D.1.3.1: Describe types of freshwater and saltwater bodies (e.g., lakes,

rivers, wetlands, oceans).
S4.D.1.3.2: Explain how water goes through phase changes (i.e.,
evaporation, condensation, freezing, and melting).
S4.D.1.3.3: Describe or compare lentic systems (i.e., ponds, lakes, and bays)
and lotic systems (i.e., streams, creeks, and rivers).
S4.D.1.3.4: Explain the role and relationship of a watershed or a wetland on
water sources (e.g., water storage, groundwater recharge, water filtration,
water source, water cycle).
II. Prerequisites: Students will have a basic understanding of clouds, different types of
precipitation and the water cycle.
III. Instructional Objective: Students will continue to learn different parts of the water
cycle. They will learn the changes in water evaporation, condensation, freezing and
melting.
IV. Instructional Procedures:
1. Discuss the changes in water - evaporation, condensation, freezing and
melting (domain3a)
a. Evaporation Evaporation is when the sun heats up water in

rivers or lakes or the ocean and turns it into vapor or steam. The
water vapor or steam leaves the river, lake or ocean and goes
into the air.
b. Condensation Water vapor in the air gets cold and changes

back into liquid, forming clouds.

c. Precipitation - Precipitation occurs when so much water has

condensed that the air cannot hold it anymore. The clouds get
heavy and water falls back to the earth in the form of rain, hail,
sleet or snow.
2. Students will create a water cycle in a bag. Including:
a. Condensation
b. Precipitation
c. Accumulated water or ground water
d. Evaporation
e. Heat
3. Tape bag to window to show water cycle

V. Materials and Equipment:

VI. Assessment/Evaluation: Class participation, along with the creation of the students
water cycle in a bag will be used to assessment.
VII. Accommodations or Modifications needed for students with disabilities or
ESOL:
Students will be read information needed, or given the appropriate spellings for words.
Extra time will also be given, if necessary.

VIII. Technology: Students will watch the video online through the smartboard.
