Big Understanding
The learner will use addition and subtraction to solve meaningful problems with
whole numbers as well as decimals. The numbers will come from the price tags
found on the items to purchase presented in the power point.
Objective
The learner will calculate their budget for the holiday shopping season by the end of
the lesson.
Assessment Evidence
You are finally earning money for helping around the house. With the holiday season
around the corner, you want to earn enough money to buy something special for
your mom, dad, sister, and grandma. When the budget calculations are complete,
you will be able to determine if you have enough to do your holiday shopping.
Opening Hook
Using teacher made and/or commercial pictures labeled with prices, students will be
asked if the teacher has enough money in her hands to buy that item.
Instructional Strategies/Activities
Realia: Each student will have their own handout to work out problems for their
budget.
Guided Practice: I will walk through the steps to complete each problem as we
complete the tasks as a class. I will also ask the students to recall a previous lesson
where we learned how to write a whole number as a decimal.
Cues/Questions: During the lesson, I will ask what the next step should be and/or if I
am completing the problem correctly. If the student is not sure, I will us cues like
referencing a previous problem to try to get them to the right answer.

Pictures of items to purchase with price in power point, fake money, worksheet,
pencil

Holiday Spending Budget


You have finally saved up some of your chore money, and want to do some holiday shopping for your
mom, dad, sister, and grandma. Please read the scenarios below to see if you are going to add money or
subtract it from your budget. Remember in order to complete the problem you are on, you will need the
answer from the previous problem. You are starting with $21.37.
1. Grandma gives you $5 for putting away her groceries, and for being just too darn cute!

3. You lost your last baby tooth. The tooth fairy left you $4!

4. Dad is a huge San Antonio Spurs fan! You have to get him the championship tie for work! It will

5. Mom really appreciated all your help with yard work. She gives you $8.35

6. Student Council is selling holiday wreaths for $8 each. Mom and grandma would each love on for
their houses. (Hint: this problem needs to be completed in 2 steps).
