Solving Multi-Step Inequalities

Making a "Not Two-Step Inequalitie" into TWO STEP!!! (INEQUALITY!!!)

For each Multi-Step Inequality, we are going to try follow

the same five steps. Sometimes not all of the steps will
apply, but we will still check for all five anyway. Look to
the column for the five steps ...
7x + 2(x + 6) 39
First, use the Distributive Property to get rid of
the parentheses.
7x + 2(x + 6) 39
7x + 2x + 12 39
Now combine any like terms that exist on the left side of
the inequality sign and on the right side of the inequality
sign (notice in this problem, there is only one number on
the right side of the inequality sign, so there will be no
like terms to combine there).
7x + 2x + 12 39
9x + 12 39
You should now check to see if you can Consolidate Your
Variables, but you only do that step when there are
variables on both sides of the equals sign. The only
variable is on the left side, so we'll skip that step.
TWO STEP!!!
9x + 12 39
12 12
9x = 27
9 9
x3

The 5 Steps:
DP - Distributive Property
CLT - Combine Like Terms
CYV - Consolidate Your Variables
TS - TWO

STEP!!!

DP so you can CLT right

before you CYV to get a

TS!

Like Terms:
1) Have the Same Variable
Part
3x and 4x are like terms
7 and 10 are like terms
3x and 5y are NOT like terms
7xy and 10x are NOT like terms

2) Have the Same Exponent

3x2 and 4x2 are like terms
10y and 14y are like terms
3x2 and 5x are NOT like terms
7x2y and 3xy2 are NOT like terms

How to Graph Inequalities:

3x + 2(x 7) > 14(1 + 2x) 10

DP
3x + 2(x 7) > 14(1 + 2x) 10
3x + 2x 14 > 14 + 28x 10
CLT
3x + 2x 14 > 14 + 28x 10
5x 14 > 4 + 28x
When Consolidating
Variables, I always like to
add/subtract the smaller of
the two. In this case, we
have 5x and 28x ...

CYV
5x 14 > 4 + 28x
28x
28x
23x 14 > 4

28x is the smaller one, so

I'll add it to both sides.

TS!!!
23x 14 > 4
+14 +14
23x > 18
