Using Social Media in the Classroom

We introduce it to students as an
additional resource, it is not required.
We control the class accounts &
Instagram is kept private.
Before students can follow us, they need
to return a parent permission slip.
Johal, Venturino 2015

Getting Started
1. Create an educational account - not your
personal account.
2. Send a social media permission slip home
with students to be signed by parents.
3. Teach students about digital citizenship and
netiquette.
4. Start posting and sharing!
Johal, Venturino 2015

Twitter
Purpose:
microblog 140 character limit
Ability to interact with people all over
the world using hashtags (ex: #CUE15)
Works on all internet-connected devices
Account can be public or private
Johal, Venturino 2015

Why we love Twitter

We are able to connect with teachers and
classes globally!
Break down the four walls of our
classroom

Twitter = Global Citizens

Students can connect with other students
and people all over the world to share or
promote a cause.
Students can take an active role in current
events and issues to voice their opinions.
#FergusonInClass #JeSuisCharlie
#PositiveThoughts #MakeALawForJamey

More class tweeting

Something to try: have your
students create the tweet for the day
as an exit ticket and you post it to
the class account.

Johal, Venturino 2015

Instagram
Purpose:
Post photos and short videos (15 seconds
max).
Students can like and comment on posts.
It is another way to reach your students and
their interests.
Johal, Venturino 2015

Why we love Instagram

Its social media students and their parents
use it frequently.
We can post pictures, and they stay private.
Instagram accounts can be made public.
Ensure that your class is private.
Parents can be inside of the classroom.

What is Remind?

Remind is a free,
safe, easy-to-use
communication tool
that helps teachers
connect instantly with
students and parents.

It works with cell

phones, tablets and
computers.

Remind
Remind students in your
extracurricular organizations about
important meetings
(ie. Robotics Club)

Show students real-time science,

like when they can see Jupiter in
the night sky!

Johal, Venturino 2015

Remind
Remind messages
can be sent to your
Twitter, less work for
you!

Homework and
project reminders.
Students are
checking this app
more than their email!
Johal, Venturino 2015

Remind allows for easy

enrollment using a cell phone so
you can have parents enrolled in
your class.
The app can be downloaded onto
iPads and cell phones for
students to access a live stream
of all messages posted by the
teacher.

Other possibilities

Snapchat
The kids are currently obsessed, but anything that is posted will
become invisible after a set time.
Pinterest
A good starting point: http://www.edudemic.com/guides/theteachers-guide-to-pinterest/
Edmodo or Facebook
Edmodo has the look and feel of Facebook, but it can be used as a
classroom. Facebook Group pages can be made private for your class.
Tumblr
Blogging with photos
