Abstract
Reservoir characterization is the most important task to build a dynamic reservoir
model. Permeability distribution of the dynamic model has important roles in the reservoir
performance prediction. This is even of particular importance and crucial in evaluating a
marginal field. The main purpose of this paper is to present results of a comparative study of
two permeability prediction methods implemented in the reservoir model of a marginal field
and test the model against eleven DST data available from the field.
Parameters from the DST data used to validate the dynamic reservoir model include
oil rate, gas rate, water rate, flowing bottom-hole pressure, and skin factor. In addition, the
permeability distribution resulted from each method are analyzed on the basis of geological
aspects, mainly the depositional point of view. The reservoir simulation results found that the
permeability distribution greatly affects the dynamic model performance. The permeability
distribution resembling closely the depositional pattern of the reservoir layers requires less
reservoir parameter adjustments to get good matches with all the DST data. This
demonstrates the importance of geological aspects of the area of interest and implementation
of a proper method of permeability prediction for reservoir characterization.
