Week 2

Exploring Leadership Theory

Activity 1
Learning
About
Leadership
Theory

(5 MINUTES)
Welcome back to TLI! Before we get started lets take a
moment to refresh on names and allow the new participants to
introduce themselves

Have new students present their name plates

Today we are going to discuss values

(25 MINUTES)
Last week we discussed leadership as a continuum and how
the broad perspective of the term leadership can impact how
we perceive leadership as an action. Today we will discuss the
evolution of leadership and how it shapes our experience
today.

Pass out Learning about Leadership Theory handout.

Take a few minutes to read through this handout and make

notes as you go along. Consider the behaviors associated with
leadership that we discussed last week and identify the
theories that connect with those behaviors.
Select at least one person you believe fits the leadership style
of each theory. The person can be someone you know,
celebrity, politician, etc.
Please look up when you are done.

After everyone has finished reading move on to next point.

Lets define these theories in our own words.

Activity 2
Collaborative
Numbers

Call on different students to provide their

definition/interpretation of each theory and interject as
needed

What are some behaviors you connected with the theories?

Who are some leaders you connected with the theories?

(20 MINUTES)
Refer to Collaborative Numbers handout for instructions.
Provide instructions and start activity.
After activity concludes, ask the following questions

Did you prefer working alone or working with at least one

other person? What made it preferable for you?

How were your results? Where they the same or different

when working alone versus working with a group?

What do you think made the difference?

What tasks work best for you when collaborating? What

tasks work best for you when working alone?

Activity 3
Understanding
Your
leadership
Actions.

(30 MINUTES)
Now that we have had the chance to practice how this group
works as a team, lets take an assessment to discover your
leadership actions within your respective organizations.
Think back to the organizations you listed during week one.
When taking this assessment, I want you to visualize your
specific role in one of the organizations you selected.

Pass out questionnaire.

Assist students with completing the results chart.
When everyone is done proceed to debriefing questions.

What were your results? Was anyone surprised by their

results?

Do your actions reflect your leadership style? Why or why

not?

Thinking back to the leadership theories, which theory is

most like you based on your action results?

Are your actions helping to advance your organization?

Why or why not?

How do you need to adjust your leadership actions to solve

the problem statement you wrote in the first week?

What is your take away from today?

Closing Remarks

Sum up the conversations that were had

Make announcements if needed
