IU3 - Performance Objectives and Assessments

Introduction and Overview

IU3 focuses on the development of performance objectives of the first level
tasks identified in IU2. The performance objectives are directly related to
the tasks students need to complete in order to achieve the main goal
statement. Performance objectives can be broken into three parts: Condition
(CN), Behavior (B), and Criteria (CR). The instructional goal statement is
presented below along with individual steps of the instructional goal,
performance contexts, and sample assessments.
Goal Statement
Upon completion of the Instructional Unit, Forensic Science students will be
able to correctly match unknown fingerprints from a mock crime scene to a
suspects known fingerprints by 1) classifying fingerprint patterns, 2) subclassifying fingerprint patterns and 3) locating, identifying, and matching
fingerprint ridge characteristics (minutiae).
Steps in Achieving Instructional Goal, Performance Objectives, and
Assessments

Performance Context
Using evidence from a
mock crime scene (CN),
the students will correctly
(CR) identify the suspect
who committed the crime
(B).

3) locating, identifying,
and matching
fingerprint ridge
characteristics
(minutiae).
Steps in Instructional
Goal
1. Students will organize
fingerprint exemplars
into the 3 main classes.

2. Students will subdivide the 3 fingerprint

classes into their
respective sub-classes.

Performance Objectives
Given a deck of
fingerprint exemplars
(12-15 fingerprints)
(CN), students will
classify prints as Loops,
Arches, or Whorls (B)
with 100% accuracy
(CR).
Using fingerprint
exemplars from previous
step (CN), students will
identify respective subclasses (B) with 100%
accuracy (CR).

3. Students will identify

minutiae on each
exemplar fingerprint.

Shown a variety of
fingerprint exemplars (5
fingerprints) (CN),
students will locate and
identify 8 -12 minutiae
on each fingerprint
exemplar (B) with 100%
accuracy (CR).

4. Students will evaluate

and match unknown
fingerprint samples to
known suspect samples.

Given a mock crime

scene with fingerprint
evidence (CN), students
will evaluate evidence

Summary
In IU3, first level tasks identified in IU2 were used to develop performance
objectives. The performance objectives will outline the learning conditions,
the learner behaviors, and assessment criteria for each step in the
instructional goal. IU4 will focus on development of an instructional
strategy, selection of materials, and creation of a rough draft of materials
selected.
