Trade Off for the Better?

When a person gives something they expect
something in return. This scenario falls
perfectly with China and Angolas situation.
After the 27-year old war Angola has had, its
infrastructure has faced many challenges. To
face these challenges and build up the
country from ruins it needs some financial
help. Which is provided with the help of
China.
It is one of Angola's largest trading
partners, meanwhile the United States is
3
trying to attempt to take the role again.
You
may be asking yourself what will China get
out of helping Angola? Well the answer
would have to be one of Angola's most
common resource and trade supply, oil.
When a person gives they expect something
in return and lets say both China and Angola
are having an equal part of the equation.
Through investments toward the nascent oil
sectors for Angola, China benefits great trade
deals. Chinas now receives 1/3 of its oil from
Angola, there largest supplier of oil.5 Besides
oil Angola exports resources like iron ore,
metals, agricultural products, small amounts
of food and other commodities. Now what

Angola gets from helping China is help with

infrastructure projects. There were a series of
credit lines and loans that were open for funds
for Chinese companies to help build railroads,
schools, roads, hospitals, bridges and offices
and also train Angolan telecommunications
workers.

to get its oil from angola? Their partnership

has lasted since 2001 and has grown ever
since.

Some people think that people in Angola are

like children, dont know what's right from

wrong and dont know how to make decisions
for themselves. The fundamental problem
facing Africa is governance- it doesn't matter
how many roads or ports5. Sadly this is what
Africa has come to. People in Africa blame
Chinese companies for maintaining unfair
labor practices. They also accuse the
companies of under biding local firms and not
hiring them for jobs. Is China offering help in
return as a goodwill for later investments
opportunities? Its exploitation behavior in
Africa has prompted questions about the
future of their friendship. Will China continue

Trade from Africa to China and from China to Africa

since 2001-2011.

Angola is known for its incredible list of

resources. Most of them bring us luxury in our
everyday lives for example: diamonds, gold,
1
petroleum, uranium, etc...
The list goes on and
on but do people know what actually happens
in Angola. Sex trafficking and forced labor are
issues that happen in Angola that most people
don't know of. Here women, children and men
are subjected into forced labor or sex
trafficking. It all depends on your age and
gender and you're set for a task of
exploitation. ECPAT estimates that 3,000
children under the age of 18 are involved in
prostitution for their survival and thousands
more are sold for sex on the streets of
4
Luanda.
Sex trafficking should be given much
more attention that what it has been receiving
the past years.
Angola is known as a 2nd tier country which
means that it does not fully meet the
standards to eliminate trafficking, Angolas
government has made minimal law
enforcements towards this situation in the
5
past year.
Even though the government
amended the penal code it failed to initiate
any prosecution of suspect offenders and have
never convicted a trafficker. Just how the
government has made minimal efforts with
the traffickers they have also made minimal
efforts with the victims. The government
identified and rescued 21 potential victims in
2013 but they did not provide them with
2
protective services.
In 2013 10 children were
found with a Chinese construction firm, the
police worked with National Institute of

Children to reunite them with their families

but were not provided additional protective
services.

This issue can be prevented if given the right
amount of attention and discipline. By training
law enforcement officials and teach them what
the new penal code is. Giving shelter, medical
and counseling attention to all the victims
either directly or with a partnership with
NGOs. Lastly keep track of anti-trafficking law
2

enforcement
data.
Following
these
recommendations Angola will be much closer
on solving this issue and not be in the minimal
requirements to be a 2nd tier country. People
will be much closer to their human rights and
be treated fairly.
