Cross Curricular Standards

I have tried to make it so that for this PBL based unit the items that are
created can transcend across the curriculums wherever possible. My culminating
activity, or week two of my unit, will be created to cover three different content
areas. For example with the creating of the space station my students will be
using their math skills to solve for the volume and measurement of the structure,
this is the basic premise of the project. They will also have to refer to the solar
system unit that we are covering in space to create the details for what their
space station is like, what planet it is near, and what it would need to have in it to
survive. They will show this in the writing or language arts center during writing
where they will write a persuasive essay on why people should move to their
space station. With standardized testing coming up these students were asking
by the principle to work primarily on persuasive essays so this will cover the
writing as well. This will help support the content, and also allow for elaboration
on a fun project and creative idea.
The culminating activity along with other projects from week one, such as
the candy box and graham cracker house, connect with art. The volume music
video will connect with music as well. That way the arts are a main focus as well

throughout both weeks. For counseling or oral presentations the students have to
present their candy box and their space station as well.
Throughout the rubric there are sections for grading in regards to
the creativity for the art portion of the project. The writing will be graded in a
separate subject based on a rubric that the students grade on themselves for
their peers. This will be done during the language arts portion of the class, and in
the computer lab where they will type up their project. This will help give them
more practice with actually typing on the computer, which is a skill they need to
work on.
I think overall the unit crosses over many subject areas and is
beneficial in the support of the math standard as well as the content for the other
subjects as well. I think that adding these subject areas into the unit will help
expand their thinking and knowledge, plus hit all of the things that the school
wants the students to work on.
