ECCS 2311-02
Lab 2: KVL and Voltage Dividers
Westley Gomez
Mandy Lipnichan
Lab Performance Date: September 9, 2014

Objective:
To become familiar with equipment within the lab and verify the concept of Kirchhoffs Voltage
Law, voltage division, and the power balance concept.
Equipment List:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Instek Power Supply, GPS 3303

2 BK Benchtop Digital Multimeters
2 resistors with values 270 and 680
Assorted Leads

Circuit Diagram:

Procedure:
When the equipment is gathered proceed to set up circuit as shown in the circuit diagram. It is
important that you ground your circuit after the setting up the initial leads to mimic the diagram.
From their attach leads to where you can measure the current that is going through one of the
resistors. It doesnt matter which one due to the resistors in series. Increase the amount of
voltage to see the change of current on the multimeter with a change in 5V each interval.
Afterwards rewire the leads to measure the voltage for each resistor and repeat the measuring
process.

Sample Calculations:
Equations Used:
V 1=

R1
V T
Rtotal

I =V 1 /R 1
Sample:

If R1=270 , R 2=680 ,V T =5 Volts

V 1=

I=

270
5 V =1.42 Volts
( 270+ 680 )

1.42 Volts
=5.26 mA
