Earth Day
By Isabella

Garbage Statistics

3,000 pounds of food are wasted every second (in the US)

It takes up to 400 years for plastic to break down in a landfill

The average amount of paper products per person used in the US is 700 pounds

About 1,500 plastic bottles per second end up in a landfill

Though these statistics are depressing, you can help change them! Reuse and recycle, and lower these numbers!

Senator Gaylord Nelson

Earth Day: History and Present

Earth day, a day of environmental awareness on April 22, was first
celebrated in 1970. During the sixties and years before, Americans were very
unaware of our environment. There was lots of air pollution, gas, and
industries could belch out smoke that harmed the earth without
consequences from the government. This was when Senator Gaylord Nelson,
from Wisconsin, first got the idea of earth day. He described it as a national
teach in on the environment, and it had the support of both democrats and
republicans, something that was pretty rare. So, on April 22, 1970, 20 million
Americans protested for our earth. Earth day was the start of a chain reaction
that eventually led to new laws being passed by Bill Clinton to protect the
environment. Senator Nelson was eventually awarded the Medal of Freedom,
the highest honor that can be given. Earth day is still celebrated today, and is
a beloved yearly tradition.
