Position Summary: Eradicate Global Hunger

Name of Delegate: Phatsawan Mild Chivisetpone

Issue: What can we (as a united faction) do to eradicate global hunger?
Country Assigned: China
1) What is the current statue of the Issue in your country?
Currently there are 805 million people worldwide who are undernourished
and is the number one risk to health worldwide, more than AIDS, malaria and
tuberculosis diseases combined. There are actually enough food to feed everybody
on the planet, but those who are in the state of hunger does not have the access to
proper meals containing all the required nutrients to stay healthy and are living under
poverty.
In Asia, there are presently more than 500 million people suffering from
hunger. The number of poverty an hunger have increased in Asia due to the high
demand for food while water and land resources have decreased, causing food prices
to rise. Therefore, the people who are living in poverty cannot afford to have these
foods. However, due to foreign aids and the help from the United Nations, the
amounts of hungry people in Asia have decreased by 34 percent in 2013 compared to
1990.
China is one country that is facing several hunger issues that are not only
causes by poverty, but from over population, inequality and the use of chemicals in
food. There have been reports stating that in 2014 there are 120 million underweight
Chinese under 18 while 10% of the population are in the state of hunger and are
suffering from malnutrition. This shows that there is an inequality between urban,
suburban and in rural areas of the country. In addition, there have been news on the
excess use of pesticides and fertilizers on food. This issue is a major problem in the
food supplies in China, because it is a health hazard for a person who does not really
have the choice to choose for better quality food. Adding to this, industrialization is
also one of the main problems that cause food shortages and hunger issue in China.
As more and more factories are being built more farmlands are being destroyed,
causing in the reduction of grain production.
2) What is your countrys stand on this Issue?
The main goal of China in this moment is to be self-sufficient in the
production of grain, reducing as much foreign aid as possible. One major issue is to
reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers when farming in order to increase soil
fertility and decrease poison in food. There have been numerous reports about
poisons in food such as the Blue Pork, this involves pork that glowed blue in the dark
due the excess chemical inside the pork. Adding to this, China would want to increase
farmlands and promote equality between people living in urban, suburban and rural
areas.
Chinas main focus right now is towards solving the use of excess
chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers on food, especially grains. It will be able to
achieve this goal by promoting and educating people about the disadvantages of the
use of these chemicals. Also, it would have to research to find alternative ways to
reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers on crops, such as using organic fertilizers
made from waste produced in households.
3) Explain the reason/s for the stand.
China hopes that with campaigning against the use of pesticides and
fertilizers, purchasing farmlands in other countries, while working with the help of the

World Food Program or WFP, would increase the production of grains and would
eventually reduce the number of hunger in the country. WFP not only helps in sending
food aid to rural areas in China, but also helps in raising funds and planning to help
eradicate hunger. Food and hunger problems are to be taken seriously in China, not
only because the people are suffering from malnutrition, but also China as one of the
worlds largest economy, would be able to improve its quality of agricultural goods
and become one of the worlds largest agricultural exporters.
This solution can be applied to developing countries that are rapidly
industrializing and have numbers of decreasing in farmlands. Also, it would be
applicable to countries that have a large number of populations, especially around
Asia, as Asia is known to be one of the worlds suppliers in agricultural goods.
Meanwhile, as China is closed to reaching its goals in terms of eradicating hunger, it
can also start to focus more on eradicating world hunger, providing financial aids,
people and food supplies to these suffering countries.
