Steps in Catalytic Reactions

There are seven (7) steps in a catalytic reaction

1. Mass Transfer
2. Diffusion in pores
3. Adsorption
4. Reaction
5. Desorption
6. Diffusion in pores
7. Mass Transfer

Mass Transfer of the Reactants

(Products)

many industrial reactions, the overall reaction rate is controllerd by

In
the rate of the mass transfer of the reactants and products between the
bulk and catalytic surface.

Mass Transfer is the movement of the atoms or molecules from one

place to another place. And the rate of the mass transfer of the
reactants and products are calculated by the following equaition;
Where;

For a binary component system, the Bulk Motion Flux is equal to

Where;

The Diffusion Flux can be calculated from the Ficks first law;

From these Equations;

For Equimolar Counter Diffusion,

For Diffusion Throught a Stagnant Gas, then;

Steps for Modelling Diffusion

1. Perform a differential mole balace on a particular species A
2. Substitute for in terms of
3. Replace by the appropriate expressin for the concentration gradient
4. State the boundary conditions
5. Solve for the concentration profile
6. Solve for molar flux

Diffusion in Pores

In a heterogeneous reaction sequence, mass transfer of the reactants

first takes place from the bulk fluid to the external surface of the pellet.

Then the reactants diffuse from the external surface into and through
pores within the pellet, with reaction taking place only on the catalytic
surface of the pores

Surface Reaction

Once
a reactant has been adsorbed onto the surface, it is capable of
reacting in a number of ways to form the reaction product.

There are three ways;

The surface reaction maybe a single-site mechanism in which only the site on
which the reactant is adsorbed is involved in the reaction.
for the reaction,

The surface reaction is dual-site mechanism in which the adsorbed reactants

interacts with another site.

A third mechanism is the reaction between an adsorbed molecule and a

molecule in the gas phase;
