Volleyball Day Three Lesson

Unit: Volleyball 7th grade

Teachers: Miriam Garzes-Njie & Paul Couretas
Day: Day Three bumping and setting review and modified game play
Standards:

M.TG.07.01 Demonstrate selected tactical skills such as accuracy in

distance and direction (e.g., reducing number of shots, implement
selection, set up routine) during modified 1 vs. 1 target games.
M.NG.07.01 Demonstrate selected solutions to tactical problems,
including off the object problems of scoring (e.g., maintaining a rally,
setting up to attack, winning the point) and preventing scoring (e.g.,
defending space, defending against attack) during modified net/wall
games (e.g., small sided games, such as 1 vs. 1 to 3 vs. 3).
K.RP.07.02 Explain why to choose to participate in physical activity on
a regular basis, outside of physical education for personal enjoyment
and benefit in dynamic setting.

Lesson Objectives:
1. SWBAT Demonstrate tactical skills such as accuracy and distance for
the skills of the bump and set pass. Students will be in the proper
ready position, track the ball and get underneath it and complete
proper passes to a teammate or partner with either both the bump and
the set.
2. SWBAT Demonstrate solutions to tactical problems to an opponents
attack. Students can properly defend, and understand where they need
to more to be in a good defensive position. Students can defend their
space against the opponents attack with proper form, using the bump,
set, or block.
3. SWBAT Explain why participating in physical activity on a regular basis
is important. Students will understand that finding an activity they can
participate in outside of physical education can bring joy and a sense
of belonging to an individuals life.
Lesson Assessments:
1. Teacher will assess students based on their effectiveness of the bump
in terms of completing the skill with mature form, accuracy, and proper

trajectory. Students will be assessed during modified game play and

drilled practice.
2. Teacher will assess students based on their effectiveness of the set in
terms of completing the skill with mature form, accuracy, and proper
trajectory. Students will be assessed during modified game play and
drilled practice.
3. Students will be able to assist and correct improper form of the bump
during partner practice. This will indicate that the students are
competent with the skill if they can observe incorrect form, and correct
it.
4. Students will be able to assist and correct improper form of the set
during partner practice. This will indicate that the students are
competent with the skill if they can observe incorrect form, and correct
it.
Equipment and Set-up:
o Three volleyball nets and 24 volleyballs.
o Set-up the volleyball nets ahead of class time.

Risk Management Concerns:

o Make sure you are aware of your surroundings; Volleyballs will be flying
every which way!
o Make sure you have enough personal space for bumping and setting
practice!
o Try to control your ball, even though volleyballs are somewhat soft, we
dont want anyone getting hit with one!

Lesson Preview: (3 Minutes)

Today we are going to be refining our skills that we have previously

been working on.
We have learned the bump and the set pass, and today we will be
using those in drills and practice with a partner, as well as in modified
game play. We want to focus on our movement patterns and making
sure we have mature form while we complete the skills. We are also
working on our accuracy today in terms of distance and direction.

I will be actively observing you and your partner to make sure you
understand mature form, and can functionally complete the skills. It is
okay to struggle with these skills, its natural. Many of you have never
played volleyball, so today presents a great opportunity to improve our
skills.
With this being said, dont be afraid to mess up, push yourselves and
have fun! Lets get started.

Lesson Development (40 Minutes):

Warm up (10 Minutes)

o On my countdown I want students to grab a ball from the buckets
and spread out around the gym for warm up. Make sure you
leave the volleyball nets alone. Go.
o We are going to be completing a warm-up that will get the
muscles warmed up and loose, ready to handle volleyball
movements. These are the same warm-up movements we have
been doing all week. Then we will do partner warm-up work with
bumping, and setting to each other using the nets. Keep your
ball to your side on the floor when completing movements that
dont require hands on the volleyball.
o Everyone complete five forward and backward hand walks. Start
by standing with your legs straight and your hands on the floor.
While keeping your abs tight and legs straight, walk your hands
out. Then walk your legs to your hands with small steps and
keeping legs straight. Once your feet reach your hands step
backwards with small steps and straight legs so you are in the
V shape again and then walk your hands your feet. Stretch up
slowly, breathing out slowly and reach/stretch for the sky.

o Everyone complete ten squats holding your ball out in front of you.
Grab your ball, put your arms straight in front of you, chest out, shoulders back,
knees shoulder width apart, then sitting in an imaginary chair, go down as far as you
can go (at least 90 degrees), then stand up.
o Everyone complete ten arm circles clockwise and ten counterclockwise. Standing in
place do arm circles clockwise and counterclockwise making sure to really stretch the
arms to get ready for hitting the ball.
o Everyone complete side twist stretches with arms bent at elbow five on each side, and
arms straight out five on each side. Grab your ball with a palms on either side of the
ball twisting side to side while standing keeping your elbows and then straighten your
arms out for the next twists Really stretch out to the side trying to go as far as
possible without moving your legs or your head.
o Everyone roll your necks clockwise and counterclockwise five times each.

Review of Bump. (2 minutes)

o Students are spaced out in the gym with their own personal space. Without a ball we
walk through the cues of the bump.
Ready position- Knees bent, athletic stance, arms in front of you, head
forward, weight on the balls of your feet.
Action phase- Students load and shift weight from balls of feet, extending up
through legs and torso.
Contact- Students make contact with imaginary ball.
Follow through- Students extend through the ball.
Review of Set. (2 minutes)
o Students still in their own personal space, without ball walk through another guided
practice with the teacher on the cues for set.
Ready position- Knees bent, athletic stance, arms in front of you, head
forward, weight on the balls of your feet.
Action phase- Students load and shift weight from balls of feet, extending up
through legs and torso, have hands above head forming a triangle equal with
their ears.
Contact- Students make contact with imaginary ball.
Follow through- Students extend through the ball.
Partner Bump. (5 minutes)
o Students in pairs bump the volleyball to each other with mature form. Each pair tries
to see how many times they can continuously bump the ball to each other.
Partner Set. (5 minutes)
o Students in pairs set the volleyball to each other with mature form. Each pair tries to
see how many times they can continuously set the ball to each other.
Modified Gameplay. (16 minutes)
o Each pair faces off against another pair in a modified volleyball game. There are 3
courts each with 4 teams. Teams take turns rotating playing time, and assessing time.

For example, team 1 vs. team 2 and team 3 will assess team 1, while team 4 will
assess team 2. After they play for 4 minutes, they switch roles, and team 3 plays team
4, while teams 1 and 2 assess.
After the assessment phase of the game, the two teams on the same side of the net
will join playing a larger game! So it will be teams 1 and 3 vs teams 2 and 4.
Gameplay will consist of rally scoring, and we will play for a duration of time, not to
a specific score. Students may only advance the ball over the net by a bump or a set.
No overhand shots allowed in this modified game.
Team 1 vs. team 2 (4 minutes)
Team 3 vs team 4 (4minutes)
Team 1and 3 vs team 2 and 4 (8 minutes)

Lesson Review: (5 minutes)

o Teacher reflects on the positive things observed in class. (great mature form of skills,
accuracy improved tremendously, great enthusiasm and teamwork, etc)
o Teacher goes over some areas that may need improvement. (communication with
teammates, focusing on the cues of the skill, etc)
o Teacher goes over ways to practice at home. Students these skills can all be practiced at
home, even without a ball. If you have a ball you can work on bumping and setting to
yourself. If you dont have a ball you can go through the cues of mature form!
o Next class we will be building on these skills, and also adding a new skill! The underhand
serve will be implemented into our skillset, and we will be playing more modified games!
o Great class everyone, we will see you next time!
