Quiz 1
Group B

Calculus III
MATH 200 Section 106

This quiz has 3 questions on 1 page, for a total of 15 points. You have 15 minutes to answer all
questions. Use the back of the page if necessary. Read the questions carefully before giving your answer.
Please give full explanations of all your steps, answers without reasoning will not be credited. No
documents or electronic devices of any kind (including calculators, cell phones, etc.) are allowed.
Name and Student-No:
5 P.

1. Find the cross product a b, where a = 3i + 2j + 4k and b = i 2j 3k and verify that it is orthogonal
to the vector b.

Solution:
a b =< (2)(3) (4)(2), (4)(1) (3)(3), (3)(2) (2)(1) >=< 2, 13, 8 >,
and a b b = (2)(1) + (13)(2) + (8)(3) = 2 26 + 24 = 0.

5 P.

2. Find parametric equations for the line through the points (1,-3,6) and (5,-4,2). The direction of the line
is v =< 4, 1, 4 >.

Solution: Taking P0 = (1, 3, 6), we get that the parametric equations for the line are
x = 1 + 4t,

5 P.

y = 3 t,

z = 6 4t.

3. Find an equation of the plane that passes through the origin and contains the line x = 3t, y = 1 + t, and
z = 2 t.

Solution: Setting t=0 and t=1, we find that the points P = (0, 1, 2) and Q = (3, 2, 1) are on the
plane. Therefore the normal vector to the plane is n =< 0, 1, 2 > < 3, 2, 1 >=< 3, 6, 3 > .
Taking bf r0 =< 0, 1, 2 >, we get the equation
3x + 6(y 1) 3(z 2) = 0.
