Why do people speak

Portuguese in Brazil?
In 1807, the King John
VI and his family fled to
Brazil to escape Napoleons
attack on Portugal. After
more than 10 years, he
returned to Portugal, but left
his son, Dom Pedro, in
charge of Brazil in 1821.
Pedro claimed Brazils
independence from Portugal
and named himself the first
emperor of Brazil. In 1840,
Pedro II became the ruler of
Brazil. While serving as
regent over Brazil in 1889,
Pedro IIs daughter abolished
slavery. This was not a
popular choice for many
citizens as they felt it was
necessary to possess slaves.
Due to this, the royal family
of Brazil went into exile and
fled to Europe. After the end
of the monarchy, Brazil
became a Republic.
