CHOSEN SONG:

I have chosen to create a music video for one of my favourite bands, Obituary. As such, I chose to
create a visual accompaniment for their song Slowly We Rot. Despite the somewhat threatening title, it
contains no explicit language, nor verbally graphic depictions of violence. We can, however, infer that
it is referencing a Zombie apocalypse of sorts. Due to the ominous wording, it opens itself up to
interpretation, meaning that I can create a piece that utilises the conventions of both horror and death
metal.
There is no current music video, meaning that I am able to forge my own concept which wont have
been overly influenced by the original. In addition, as the song is relatively old in terms of release
(1985), I am aiming to inject a new lease of life into it, and help fans both new and old reconnect with
the band, and their songs.
The following link directs the reader to the audio: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVVTOHVXQQA
Prior to making this decision I requested feedback from a small focus group as a form of preliminary
research. The comments made in regards to the two ideas have been listed below:
(Idea 1) is really good because it is different (stop-motion) and it demonstrates the process of
transforming into a Zombie, which is cool.
(Idea 2) is not so good; it will have been done before and is not so unique.
(Idea 1) seems really exciting-most people will not have thought to do something like this.
(Idea 2) looks rather boring; it is not as interesting and is quite basic and common.
This solidified my belief that the first of the two was indeed superior, and should be adapted into an
achievable piece of work. With this in mind, I created a survey to determine who would be watching,
and what their preferences were.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

As can be heard, the song would not feature in a mainstream chart; death metal is something of niche
genre. Consequently, the fan base is smaller. I conducted research amongst my peers, relations and
peers to discover their musical preferences in an effort to choose how to structure my video, and the
subsequent promotion.
To open the survey I asked the recipients their
gender, in attempt to gain a better
understanding as to who was responding to the
questionnaire. As can be seen, the predominant
sex was male, with a 61.54 percentage. In
addition, the most common age was 16-17 with

six of those replying being of this age.

Everyone involved was heterosexual.

There was a vast spectrum in

where the recipients were
educated. The most prominent is
that of The Wye Valley
School/The
Bourne
End
Academy, with The Henley
College following suit. Below
this fell Fort Hill, The Highcrest
Academy and Dane Court.

Corresponding
with
the
responses of the SocioEconomic
data,
the
respondents all live in working
to lower middle class towns or
locations. As such, when
creating my video, any product
placement
will
not
be
extortionately priced but of an
attainable value.
The hobbies of those who
answered ranged from parkour
and pole vaulting to completing
puzzles and cooking. The
sheer diversity of the interests
of these individuals suggests
that any reference to pastimes
in my work can be somewhat
whimsical
and
obscure,
without it appearing to be too
aspirational or false.

Contradicting current buying

trends, the most common
format of purchase was on a
compact disc. Succeeding this
was the digital download
streaming and vinyl. Two
commenters noted in the
Other section that they bought
both CD and vinyl, dependent
on
accessibility
and
availability. From this, I am
able to comprehend that
distributing the music video
online, and in the means
previously listed will be an
effective method of increasing
its popularity, and the achievable revenue.

The most dominant genres

in the survey were that of
Pop
and
Hip-Hop.
Surprisingly, indie was the
joint least popular style
with drum n bass. I do feel
that by allocating it in a less
selective and more random
manner results with an
increased accuracy would
have been received.
As can be seen from my
choice of song, I am
disregarding a large portion
of the consensus that can be seen in the graph. By using my favourite genre and creating something I
am not only passionate about but goes purely against the grain, I will forge an inimitable and unique
piece.
From those who responded, I am able
to see that although people are willing
to spend on music, they do not want to
do so to the extreme; the maximum
they wish to pay out is between 22.00
and 32.00. On the release of my
video, the price to buy it as a single
item will not exceed 1.50. However,
a sum can be added to the CD to create
a Deluxe Edition where this features
as a bonus.

MARKET RESEARCH:

Unique in their sound and lyrics, Obituary helped revolutionise the genre. Inevitably, they do have
competitors in regards to fans and album sales. The closest of these are: Possessed, Deicide, Death,
Morbid Angel and Suffocation, to name only several.
Consequently, a video needs to be created that will separate it from the conventions of Death Metal;
from viewing their outputs, I discovered that using the medium of stop-motion does not appear to have
been done; it is an uncommon exploit. This alone, I theorised, would gain media interest due to its
nature, hence attracting curious fans and those who have come across it by accident, through merely
trawling the internet. To explore this aspect, I watched the creations of some of my favourite artists,
these
included::
Blow
Your
Trumpets,
Gabriel
by
Behemoth
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnTL1L8a6YI), The Chosen Legacy by Dimmu Borgir
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GF3wagWwHjM), The Watcher by Enslaved, Loco by Coal
Chamber (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-sYWaOrLdI) and Pray for Villains by Devildriver
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4G4FcPzeIw). This highlighted that the subject matter being
covered in the videos is often dark, disturbing and heavy on fake blood-something that I will carry
across into my own work.
Explicit violence, gore and disturbing imagery is a common factor within the genre, as can be seen in
this Deicide song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJkMrl4AG8w). I have decided to manipulate
this slightly so that the fear being conveyed is more psychological, with minimal blood. This coupled
with the deceptive, innocent appearance of the video will cause the viewer to be intrigued by the
aesthetics, causing them to watch the entire duration.
In regards to advertising, there are numerous methods one can use to promote the artist. Television
commercials are one of these. Not commonly used for metal bands due to the reduced size of the target
audience, they can prove to be effective for those of a slightly higher calibre. Those who have more of
a radio friendly sound, for example, can gain popularity and sales resultant of this. An example is
Avenged Sevenfolds 2013 album Hail to the King. They released a televised trailer
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emlXp1Hgdo4), and it proceeded to reach number one on the US
Billboard.
Similarly, billboards can be used as a form of extending the knowledge of the musician and any new
album. The example seen opposite was
created as a method of encouraging sales of
AC/DCs Rock or Bust. Prior to this, they
were already one of the most renowned, and
formidable, acts in history. This effectively
secured further success by spreading the word
of the release, and ensuring that virtually
everyone was aware of it. Currently, it is at
number five on The Billboard Chart, having
been
there
for
11
weeks

(http://www.billboard.com/album/6282836/rock-or-bust). In Australia, it debuted at number one at

three in the United Kingdom (http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6385962/acdcsrock-or-bust-debuts-at-no-1-down-under).

Online advertising is one of the most effective tools within modern day society-millions of people
browse various websites every day, meaning there is the opportunity of high exposure. Announcements
referring to a new music video/album can be placed before existing ones on destinations such as
YouTube and Vevo. Alternatively, they can appear in the margins of the site in a simplified pictorial or
basic video format.
Occasionally, this can go wrong by targeting the incorrect groups; a prime example of this occurred
during the research for this document. Having selected song to potentially reference-Immortal All Shall
Fall (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOOebk_dKFo) -a trailer for a DJ electronic band preceded
the video. Due to the incalculable differences between the two genres those who came to the page to
view the video are forced to endure the antithesis of their own tastes.
When done suitably, with similar artists, attention can be turned to the advertised musician and those
who see it may proceed to investigate them further.
Having examined these techniques, I have approached the conclusion that promoting the new
video/album online, against the related artists will be the best-and most realistic-approach. Due to the
nature of the vocals and instruments, I do not feel placing it on mainstream television would benefit its
sales and views. As opposed to billboards, posters will be placed in hard rock/metal venues in an attempt
to expose those who are interested in the genre to the release.
Market placement is an integral aspect. Through my research I was able to see that CDs remain the
most popular form of purchasing music. This is followed by digital versions. As such, physical copies
will be released in stores such as HMV, with special editions featuring the video. Downloads will be
available on services such as iTunes, making it accessible at both ends of the spectrum. Some interest
was displayed for vinyl, so a limited run of records could be produced as a method of further promoting
the music and diversity of the band.

PRODUCT RESEARCH:

AUDITIONS: The video I am creating is primarily stop motion, meaning that there will be no acting
from my peers. Despite this, I still went through a selection process. After asking my relations and
friends for any dolls they no longer required, to star as the lead, I was inundated with unwanted toys.
Thanks to this, I was forced to choose which of those I received was appropriate.
N.B. Footage of my brother pretending to be a Zombie was a last minute inclusion, with the audition
video being available on weebly.

Movability was imperative; several did not have joints and were a singular body of plastic. The limbs
needed
to be flexible as they would have to appear to walk, run, collapse, sit and so on. The
risk
with the former was that although they could be manipulated, so to speak, the
chances of them snapping were significant. Considering the time
constraints, I decided that it would be in my interests to minimise this
probability as much as possible. Opposite is an image of the final choice.
Not only does she have the Zombie aesthetic, her elbows, wrists and knees have
sockets which make it possible to move her into the required positions. Her
dress will be changed to the one seen in the Clothing section of the
document. This is shorter, meaning that greater control can be had over her
as it will not get in the way as excessively as the one she is wearing in the
above photograph. Equally, it has already been covered in blood and is
ready to be worn.

LOCATION RECCE: There is no obvious location featured within the film, instead I have created a
fictitious apartment for the character to live in. The accents in the home are exaggerated,
disproportionate and, in places, distorted. This is to portray what the protagonist is seeing; they are
slowly becoming a zombie, meaning that their vision will be hazy and wobbly. This will contribute to
the surreal tone I am trying to achieve. This said, I will need to photograph the scenes in a suitable
place-my Granddads shed is ideal.
TYPE OF ROOM/AREA:
The room is a shed, which does
feature modern day requirements
such as electricity and lighting.
LOCATION ADDRESS:
My grandparents
Micklefield Road.

home

on

POST-CODE:
HP13 7EX
NEAREST TRAIN STATION:
High Wycombe Train Station,
NEAREST BUS STOP:
Micklefield Road (Various stops along the length of the street)
LIGHTING INFORMATION: Overhead lights are present, and able to be turned on if required. There
is also a large window, and a spotlight is available, if needed. As such, I shall bring spare bulbs in
case one wears out or malfunctions. I will also have smaller torches on hand to give the impression of
flickering, or poor weather. Batteries will be available, should they be needed.
SOUND INFORMATION: Overall, the sound is good-it should not be noisy in the immediate vicinity.
The house is located next to a main road, and this could pose an issue. I can resolve this by closing the
doors and windows. This is not a major problem as sound is not required for the piece.

POWER INFORMATION: Plug sockets are available, so items can be charged in here, or in the main
building. Equally, I will charge all electronic products before recording, so the need to replenish the
battery will not prove detrimental to the shoot. Spare battery packs will be bought, as a precaution.
HAZARDS: This is also a workshop, so I will need to be vigilant to tools and harmful substances.
These are stored away, so I should not encounter them. Likewise, I should watch for cables as many
will be crossing the floors. I must be careful of my set and be cautious to not damage it-this is a hazard
to the location, and not myself.
This was not my initial location choice. I did consider my kitchen. This was disregarded due to the poor,
uncontrollable light and lack of room.
If I had used this room, I would have had to remove the set at the end of every session, which would
cost valuable time, and pose the risk of damage. At the same time, my progress could be hindered by
having to move to accommodate my mother cooking and others passing through to reach the back
garden. The space available is minimal, meaning that there would not be a place for my tripod, once it
has been extended.
In addition, the majority of the plug sockets are in use by appliances such as the microwave, kettle,
cooker and television. Those which are free are on the opposite side of the room to which I would be
working and the cables are unable to reach this distance.
CONTENT: The content of the video conforms to that of the
genre in the sense that the subject matter is relatively dark, with
evident elements of horror. I drew inspiration from Evisceration
Plague by Cannibal Corpse, my favourite bandhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=482tDopNzoc . The idea of
an outbreak of disease causing erratic mannerisms is a clear
influence; I find it appealing how it shows the individuals ordeal
and focuses on the humans last moments. At the same time, the Fleshgod Apocalypse song Pathfinder,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAyR_wS1kxY, has gifted
me with inspiration in terms of the fast cuts, and infrequent-but
impactful-scenes of violence.
Unlike these, I am utilising childrens playthings to create a
subliminally disturbing tone; this demonstrates that in times of
global peril and danger, we are all implicated, irrespective of our age. At the same time, it implies that
youth is not always as innocent as we would like to believe.
Stylistically, Wait and Bleed by Slipknot (when they still made good music!) epitomises what I would
like to achieve, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPhvqP-eWWM. The eerie atmosphere and
unnerving visuals help create a different and unique video, which is both appealing to the eye and a
contextual homage to horror.

10

A great pride in the final product is present within the scene and outputs can be rather cinematic and
seem to be a professional extension of the artist. My hope is that this will be seen in my work, and
achieve its purpose of entertaining,
and horrifying, the audience.
PLACEMENT: At the same time, it
will be placed on their Facebook and
any other appropriate social media
outlet. This enables the fans to have
an advanced viewing and be able to
watch the piece before others;
having
496,895
likes

(https://www.facebook.com/ObituaryBand) means that a significant number of their followers will be

able to see this sooner. This heightens the rapport between them, and their supporters.
YouTube will be where the video is secondarily uploaded, and links will be given through the websites
to this destination. By gaining a steady influx of views, word will gradually be spread, causing it to gain
genuine interest from fans, both old and new. As mentioned previously, CDs and downloads will form
a central part of the release of the film. Adverts for this will placed on appropriate sites, and notes
regarding the formats of the album will be placed underneath the piece, as seen opposite for the 2014
release of Inked in Blood by Obituary.

TREATMENT:

Blurb: Having been bitten by one of a zombie horde, a young adult is seen to go through the
transformative process as she becomes one herself. The majority of footage will be stop motion.
Character Profiles:
Jennifer Manson was born into a middle class family who were able to live a comfortable,
enviable existence. Having been a problem child since the age of eleven, she moved to out at
sixteen after being disowned by her family.
Throughout her social circle she was renowned for her inability to maintain relationships. As
such, she often resorted to alcohol and dabbled in soft drugs as a means of escaping herself,
frequently hiding from her friends and those who cared about her. On more than one occasion
she was offered help to attain sobriety and to combat her depression, all of which she declined.
Additionally, she is wanted in connection to a series of crimes, all of which would add to her
existing record.
At the outbreak of the apocalypse, Jennifer did not leave her apartment for a fortnight; she
survived off of a can of baked beans, bottled water and stale bread. When these provisions ran

11

out, she chose to venture out to visit her estranged parents address and raid the neighbouring
flats for supplies.
On her return, she got bitten and was forced to endure an excruciating physical and mental
alteration into one of the undead.
N.B. At no point is any drug use shown or mentioned in the lyrics.
Statement of Intent: Being an avid fan of both the band and death metal in general, I feel that I have a
strong understanding of the conventions of the genre and how best to contradict them. For example, I
do not have a cast of human characters, and the blood/violence and questionable content has been
significantly downplayed. I have also noticed how their appears to be a lack of diversity in terms to
music videos, and I wished to create something that would prove intriguing and artful; I am hopeful
that viewers will be appreciative of the visuals, irrespective of their listening preferences. The dystopian
universe that I am creating will be reflective of my-and many others-love of dark, horrific fantasy,
whilst the childrens toys inject a false approachability; potential audience members are lulled into a
false sense of security. By diametrically opposing the style of the footage, and the content, but linking
the latter to the music a twisted, distorted circle is initiated where nothing is as it seems. A subliminal
moral message is conveyed; the character of Jennifer was created to be ironic; it is a metaphorical
representation of the dangers of drugs and the delusions they can cause. As such, this, coupled with its
figurative portrayal of mortality, corresponds with the lyric fight death; people undertake these acts
as a feat, to prove their invincibility.
Plot Synopsis: A time lapse sequence shows a sunrise before cutting to footage of chaos, mayhem and
ominous news reports. This was partially influenced by Deicides End the Wrath of God video where
recordings
of
people
in
church
interject
with
the
band
playing
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOYXgRzkl2k). People will be seen running before this cuts to a
model of a door being opened. The doll closes it, sliding down in exhaustion and fear. The room is
distorted and it and the furniture seem to be disproportionate to the size of the figure. The camera gets
closer to the girl who is writhing in agony; our attention is drawn to blood on her arm. She has been
infected with the zombie virus via a bite.
Jennifer will move in a manner that suggests she is fighting the infection coursing through her veins.
She will hit the floor and doors, whilst hallucinations will appear in a translucent form around her. She
stands, wobbling on her feet. Her movements will be interjected with excerpts of hordes of approaching
zombies and a virus spreading through her body.
She jolts as this cut scene finishes. Staggering to a window, she looks out and sees the undead swarming
the land surrounding the building. Using incredibly fast cuts, we will see this group from different
angles, with them briefly appearing to be human in occasional cases.
Stunned and scared, she launces herself across the room to land in an armchair. Once again we see the
spreading of the disease. After this, the seat begins to melt away and she must escape its grasp before
getting consumed by it. At various points throughout, found footage of the enemy and viruses will be
interjected, to add interest and an added level of interest.
Feeling that she is out of options, she makes her way to a small coffee table, where a plate of rotting
food sits. She reaches for a knife next to this and stabs herself in the chest in an attempt to end her
turmoil. This does not alter her inevitable fate as she stands, a full zombie.

COSTUMES:

Although I do not have actors within my piece, the costume of the doll remains
an integral aspect. The dress the she will be wearing is youthful and suggests
that the outbreak caught her unaware. Come the recording of the piece it will
have been given a more ragged appearance, with blood where her bite would
be, and come the final scene, on her stomach.
She is wearing the skirt so that full functionality can be attained; I need to be
able to move her limbs, and this assists me in doing so.
The outfit conforms to the fashion within the metal genre primarily due to the
colouring; it is dark and does not appear to follow the mainstream trends. The
plaid patterning is often associated with rebellion and this, in turn, reflects the
characters personality.

EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES:

Having the correct equipment is essential to this video being a success. Listed below are the various
items I will need:

19

THE SET: Made with a little improvisation and everyday materials, the set was created out of a ring
binder and the lid of a box to
create an open-walled room,
which is able to photographed.
This was then decorated to look
homely, yet neglected. The
interior design is an assortment
of items made from modelling
clay and everyday products.
This contributes to the
surrealism as nothing has a
fixed form in this world, and
everything has the possibility to
change. At the same time, the
audience knows that what they
are watching is fictitious; it is
intended to play out as being a
child playing with their toys.
CANON EOS 1200 DSLR CAMERA: I am using the camera I use for my photography as the
resolution and ultimate picture quality is an improvement on my camcorder. Likewise, it is easier to
view the images as I go along.
TRIPOD: This is essential in steadying the camera. If I was to do this free-hand, I would lose a
substantial degree of professionalism. I wish to maintain as much of this as possible so that the final
product is not mediocre or amateurish in its appearance.

PROPS:

Within my work, the props play a central role; the success of the film is reliant on how well the set is
made, and the quality of the items within it.
CHAIR: Like with the other dcor, the colours of this are bright and help achieve the surrealist tone,
and an aesthetic which is the antithesis of the mood. In addition, it adds to the innocence of its
appearance (see treatment); the block colours and soft edges make it appear to be from a childs play
set. This is featured throughout as part of the general furniture. It does, however, have a significant role
when Jennifer sits on it, only to seemingly melt as part of her bite induced
hallucinations. This is suitable for the character as the juxtaposition between its
tones and her personality is significant; one is bright and cheerful, the other is
low and sad.
COFFEE TABLE: Like the chair, it will feature from the start as an element of
the scene. It rises to prominence when the protagonist must crawl over to it and
take the knife from the surface. In fitting with the clay/miniature interior, this
will be made out of a pizza separator, covered with a piece of fabric. I chose this as it is reminiscent of
how a toddler or child will improvise missing pieces within a toy house; as stated earlier, it helps to
forge the desired atmosphere of initial innocence, followed by disturbance. This is appropriate for the
protagonist as it is a basic decoration that is commonplace within many homes; having read her
biography, she would not possess anything more substantial than the necessities.

20

PLATE/FOOD: A small dollhouse plate will be placed on the previously described desk. Although
tiny it will not be miniscule, and will still be identifiable from a relatively
close distance. I will make these myself. Unlike here, they will be dirty and
look as if they have been left for an extensive period of time. On here, and
linking to the title Slowly we Rot, decomposing food will be put on top. It
will be knocked off once Jennifer begins to fumble along the desk. In
addition, the meal will also be made of clay, but both will be separate
entities.
KNIFE: Used at the final climax, the knife is the weapon that the character uses to end her suffering.
This will be small in size and made from a cocktail stick and modelling clay. Inevitably, it will be small
in size and must be able to be held by the doll. This is the darkest prop within the piece and the colours
will reflect this; the handle will be a grey whilst the blade silver, with suggestions of being previously
used. The use of this is symbolic; it implies that even though her life was dire and with little apparent
meaning, Jennifer wanted to live, despite being on a constant edge, like that of a knife-had she wanted
to end her existence she would have. It is only now that she is threatened with death, that she chooses
to do it on her own terms.
JUKEBOX: A small lighter which has the appearance of a jukebox will be placed in the room as a way
of giving the location a realistic apartment feel. In keeping with the theme of using objects of
disproportionate sizes, this is considerably smaller than the other items. Despite this, it will be an
integral aspect in the sense that it will contribute to the attractiveness of the set and ensure that it is
appealing to the eye.
POST-IT NOTE AND PENCIL: A To-Do list was drawn out as a decorative feature. By using a
normal sized post-it note and an average pencil, the surrealist nature of the piece was beginning to
become truly apparent. This was taped to the structure as a means of making it appear that prior to the
Zombie outbreak, life was continuing as normal. It also helps in conveying that the protagonist is not
seeing clearly, resultant of her bite; she is viewing the world in a distorted manner, thanks to the toxins
coursing through her veins.
DECAPITATED HEAD: In case the reader was concerning themselves with thinking about what
happened to the other dolls, the answer is that one met an undoubtedly grisly fate. Beheading. It is at
the viewers discretion whether or not an actual decapitation has occurred, or whether it is a
consequence of Jennifers psychosis. It was, however, inserted as a way of proving the disturbing nature
of the apocalypse, whilst acting as a suggestion of the lengths people will go to in order to preserve
their own wellbeing; it is as Charles Darwin theorised, only the fittest will survive.
