Mike Krzyzewski

Michael William Mike Krzyzewski, also known as Coach K, was an outstanding former
basketball player, and now is now an outstanding mens basketball coach for Duke University in
Durham, North Carolina. He started coaching for Duke in 1980; so far he has led the Duke Blue
Devils to 4 NCAA championships, and 8 championship game appearances. He has also led them
to 11 Final Fours (most of all time), 77 tournament wins (coached at 99), 13 ACC tournament
championships, 12 ACC regular season championships, he has also received 3 Naismith Coach
of the Year awards, and 5 ACC coach of the year awards. (The Legacy of Mike Krzyzewski) As
of right now, he is also 3 wins away from 1,000 wins. As a coach, he has spent 526 weeks with
his team ranked among the nations top 25 teams, 460 weeks ranked among the nations top 10
teams, and 109 weeks spent ranked No. 1 in the country. Not only has he been a successful
coach at Duke, but he has also won four gold medals as a head coach of USA Mens National
Team. (Mike Krzyzewski) He also won 2 FIBA World Championships and was an assistant

As a player, Mike Krzyzewski was a point guard/shooting guard and a captain of the
basketball team at United States Military Academy at West Point, New York and served in the
United States Army from 1969 to 1974. (The Legacy of Mike Krzyzewski) His senior year, he
led his team to the NIT in which they placed 4th. (Mike Krzyzewski, 2015)
Coach K hasnt always coached for Duke, though. After being discharge from active duty
in 1974, he started his career as a coach by becoming the assistant coach for the Indiana Hoosier
basketball team while working alongside his former college coach, Bob Knight. After one year
of coaching in Indiana, he returned to West Point as the head coach of the Army Cadets. After 5
coaching seasons at his alma mater, he left to coach at Duke. (Mike Krzyzewski, 2015)
Coach K is a highly respected coach in all sports. His coaching ethics are very well
rounded. Mike Krzyzewski has a passion for the game of basketball and you can tell through his
commitment to coaching. Many of the players that he has coached have gone on to be successors
themselves. Twelve of his former players went on to coach at different schools. Two of his
former players now work under Coach K as assistant coaches at Duke. He also coached a few
general managers, and assistant coaches for the NBA. He has his coaching at Duke has led them
to be a tough, hardworking, aggressive, dedicated, intense, and unselfish team that values

Mike Krzyzewski married his wife Carol Mickie Marsh on his graduation day in 1969.
They have 3 daughters and 9 grandchildren. Krzyzewski and his family founded the non-profit
organization in Durham, the Emily Krzyzewski Center. It was established in 2006. Their mission
is to motivate students from Kindergarten to high school to dream big, act with character and
purpose, and reach their potential as leaders in the community. (Emily Krzyzewski Center)
