Dear Prospective Employer,

My name is Samantha Hughes, and I am currently a teacher candidate

at West Virginia State University. I am working to obtain a Bachelor of
Science in Education degree at West Virginia State University, with a focus in
Elementary Education. My expected graduation date is December of 2015,
and at that time I will be available for employment. Throughout my
education career at West Virginia State University, I have attended many
seminars, trainings, and field placements to help prepare me for an
elementary education position.
I feel that I am a very qualified candidate for an Elementary Education
position because I am committed to the teaching profession. My goal is that
all students will show progress in all academic areas and be able to perform
at the mastery level and above in all areas. As a student myself, I look at
every day as being another opportunity to learn and I hope to motivate my
students to think the same way! As an educator, I will help my students
overcome obstacles which they may face. I will be a role model for students
of all ages.
This portfolio is organized into four sections: Employment Information,
Educational Philosophy, Professional Commitments, and Self-Assessments. In
section one, you will find a copy of this introductory letter, my college
transcript, my professional resume, and certification. Section two offers my
mission statement and my educational philosophy. In section three, you will
find a copy of each of my professional commitments and sample work which
supports my commitment. The different commitments you will find are:
Commitment to Student Learning, Commitment to Diversity, Commitment to
Technology, Commitment to Content Knowledge, and my commitment to the
profession. Section four, which is titled self-assessments, is a more personal
section. This section shows my growth that occurred throughout my time at
West Virginia State University, and my future plans and goals as a teacher
candidate.
