Topic Selection: Overview of New Library Media Center
Over the summer, Ideal Middle Schools Library Media Center was renovated and
reorganized to better meet the needs of staff and students.
During an in-service day at the beginning of the year, all staff is invited to attend a
training on the new online catalog and newly organized sections of the library media
center.
Format:
Activities:
To start, a brief time period will be allowed for mingling, coffee and donuts, and set-up.
Upon entering, each staff member will be asked to put their name on a raffle ticket to be
used later for door prizes. The agenda will be projected on the screen.
To get everyone settled, music will be played to let the staff know it is time to take their
seats. At each seat, will be the agenda for the day, a hand-out for the PowerPoint, a blank
index card, and blank sheet of notebook paper for questions.
Introductions will be made for the presenters: the library media specialist, technology
specialist, and other pertinent staff assisting in the training.
Before beginning the presentation, staff members will use the blank index card for an ice
breaker. Each member will be asked to write their name, two truths and one lie on the
card; fold the card and pass down the tables to be collected.
At this time the library media specialist will begin with the PowerPoint. This presentation
will include a virtual tour of the new center, any changes or adaptations to library
procedures and policies, and pictures of electronic forms for reserving materials.
After the presentation a drawing for the door prize will be done winners will receive a
new school t-shirt.
Five index cards will be selected and read, giving staff an opportunity to guess which
item is the lie.
Once the ice breaker is complete, the technology specialist will demonstrate how to use
the new online catalog and how to complete the electronic forms for reserving materials.
Organization:
Over the summer, the library media and technology specialists have been meeting to
organize this staff development.
On the first in-service day, all staff will receive an invitation in their mailboxes enticing
them to attend the staff development.
An email reminder will also be sent to staff the day prior to this training day.
Follow-Up:
After the first two-to-three weeks of school, a follow-up questionnaire will be placed in
the mailboxes of all staff members. The results of this follow-up will be used to
determine if more information is needed to share with the staff.
