The Fortune Societys BLC Helps a Neglected Population

An experienced leader within the financial sector, Llewellyn Connolly is the

founder and former co-managing partner of the equity group at Capital
Management Advisors. Currently, Llewellyn Connolly focuses much of his
time on helping individuals with criminal records as a volunteer for the
Fortune Society, and he was recently recognized by the organization for his
help.
Since its founding in 1967, the Fortune Society has been helping
individuals who are incarcerated or were previously incarcerated reintegrate
into society as contributing members. Helping around 4,500 individuals
every year, the organization maintains several programs designed to help
with everything from housing and employment to education and health.
One of the Fortune Societys health initiatives is the Better Living Center
(BLC). Opened in 2011, the BLC is an Article 31 clinic designed to serve
individuals and families who have criminal histories and require mental
health care. This population is often at a high risk for mental illness, yet it is
frequently neglected by other health services in the country.
Estimates show that around 15 percent of individuals entering jails in New
York City have reported mental illness treatments in the past. Many believe,
however, that the actual number of incarcerated individuals who have
mental illness comes in at a far higher 90 percent. According to the

Department of Health and Mental Hygiene there is a substantial need for

services directed toward this population. The BLC is New York Citys first
outpatient treatment clinic that serves individuals who are reentering
society.
