PROCEDURE

1. Take attendance
2. Have students take the pretest answer to the best of their ability, it is not for a
grade
3. Overview: today we will be discussing conflict and bullying how they are
different and how to handle both types of situations. First we will read a book
by Dr. Seuss, Sneetches
4. Read Sneetches
5. Field questions from the reading: 1. What type of bullying was present in the
story? 2. How is this story representative of bullying? 3.How did the Sneetches
without a star feel? 4. How was the bullying resolved? What is the lesson
learned from the Sneetches? 5. Student questions
6. Discuss conflict: What is conflict? A normal part of our lives
disagreements, one-time events. What are some examples of conflicts you
many experience at school? Someone cutting you in line, somone calling
you a name, someone taking your toys
7. How can we handle conflict? Using I messages What are I messages?
stating the problem without blaming someone for it making it easier for
the other side to help solve the problem w/o having to admit theyre
wrong. How are I messages different than you messages? you messages
suggest blame, ie: YOU broke YOUR promise v. I felt disappointed when
our promise was not kept, next time we make a promise please try and
keep it. Have the class provide examples of I messages for the following: 1.
A classmate calls you a mean name 2. Your friend is ignoring you 3. Your friend
is bossing you around 4. A classmate says that he doesnt not like your shoes
5. You told your friend a secret and she promised she would not tell anyone but
told other students.
8. Bullying. What is bullying? Conflict that is more hurtful, intentional, and
repeated. What are the different types of bullying? Verbal, Physical,
Emotional, Cyber. How is bullying different than conflict? Conflict is an
incident that happens once, bullying is a repetitive act. Go over different
scenarios and have the students decide whether its a conflict situation or a
bullying situation. 1. Someone said something that hurt my feelings (c). 2. A
classmate tries to embarrass me by saying something to me almost every day
in class, calling out to me in the hallways between classes, or writing
messages on my Facebook wall (b). 3. My friends and I argue sometimes and
annoy each other (c). 4. I am constantly being picked on by a person or a
group of people (b). What do you do when you feel that you are being bullied?
Tell the bully to STOP and tell a trusted adult.
9. You tube video on cyberbullying and internet safety. What other ways can
cyber bullying take place? Game chatrooms, XBOX games, texting, etc. What
do you do if you are being cyberbullied? Tell a trusted adult right away!
10. Have the students take the post test (below the pretest) again, its not for a
grade
11. Provide students with a handout reviewing the topics discussed today to take
home and share with their parents/guardians.
