Field Trip IDU

Reflective Essay
During the fieldtrip to Yogyakarta, we visited three different NGOs. All of these
NGOs serve a different purpose, but they have one thing in common which is to sustain
human rights. The NGO for people with disabilities, supporting the rights to equality and
education taught me to not discriminate others and appreciate what I have.
The organization for disabilities is called Pusat Rehabilitasi Yakkum, and the things
we learned from this NGO can be related to what we learned from IS. When we visited this
NGO, we met a group of kids attending a special school with a very basic education. This is a
good example for practice of rights to formal education because all the kids with disabilities
are gathered in a classroom like a regular school. It might be difficult for them to go to a
public school because they might be discriminated by other kids and the facilities might not
support their needs. The facilities in this NGO are more complete because everyone with any
disabilities can participate in different activities. One example includes ramps for
wheelchairs. This relates to another human right which is equality and no discrimination. Just
because they are disabled doesnt mean that their actions should be limited. They want to be
given a chance to contribute to the community. Discrimination will have a negative effect on
them especially on their self esteem. They will start to look down on themselves, when they
actually have a lot of potential to do many things. In this organization, one of the kids was
very motivated to be study in UGM (Universitas Gajah Mada) when he gets older. Because of
no discrimination in that community, he believes that he is capable of the same things as
others. Even though we learned about empathy in Biblical Studies, our pity isnt what the

people need. They dont want to be looked down on by others, instead they wanted to be
treated like a normal person. Still, we shouldnt ignore the fact that they will sometimes need
our help. It is important to be compassionate and consider their feelings whenever we act.
Other than meeting the group of kids, we played a game where we got to experience
being paralyzed, blind, deaf and mute. Through this activity, we learned how difficult it is to
be disabled. I had to play the part of a blind person, and my task was to draw a picture.
Others who had to play the part of a mute and deaf person got the task to describe a picture
through actions, to be interpreted by the one acting as a paralyzed person, who then describes
it out loud to the blind person to be drawn. This was a very long process. At the end of this
game, it was concluded that the life of a disabled person is very difficult. Personally, after
playing this game I was amazed by all the disabled people who still manage to accomplish all
these tasks. I dont see why they should be looked down upon, because they are actually a lot
more skillful. It was also concluded that we all should appreciate what we have because we
dont have to face the same things. We have complete arms, legs, and the ability to see, talk
and hear. We should think about how much other people struggle to accomplish simple tasks
so that we remember how lucky we are.
This NGO has shown great examples of sustaining human rights, because it is a major
issue around the world where people with disabilities get discriminated. The most important
thing this NGO taught us was how the disabled only wants to be given a chance. This is
important to understand so that we can start treating everyone equally. Service and caring for
others is important, especially when we are capable of much more, but it doesnt mean that
the people we help cant accomplish anything. We shouldnt hesitate to help others when they
are in need, but we shouldnt look down on anyone.
