Charlie Hebdo debate. Liberal point of view handout.

For cohabitation to be possible, a minority group needs to assimilate the policies of the
state to which they emigrated. A religious crime in a secular state is an attempt to impose the
islamic Sharia in a liberal society. The cartoons published by Charlie Hebdo are not to be
interpreted as blasphemies, but as an abuse of the free right to speech.
Liberalism, multiculturalism and islamism are ideas open to scrutiny. No one has the
right to make a tabu out of a religion. Mohammed can be represented in Europe in whatever form
and islamism can be analyzed by Christians without the fear of being killed. If the images are
offensive, then the target group can initiate a dialogue in order to discuss the limits over which
they consider to be insulted. If the dialogue is useless, differences can be solved in front of a
judge.
The killers of the Charlie Hebdo journalists are extremists, not representatives of the
Islamic community in France. Their crime was a particular act of violence, not a generally
approved response to the cartoons. An abuse of the free right to speech, commited by the
journalists, met an abuse of the Islamic tradition, commited by two fanatics. This does not show
discrimination towards muslims in France, but an unfortunate intersection of verbal and physical
violence
