Course Description: In 8th grade math, we will be making the transition from numbers to variables and from
arithmetic to algebra. We will also be focusing on abstract thinking and problem solving.

A List of Expected Learner Outcomes:

The student will demonstrate through the mathematical process an understanding of:

Problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, connections, and representation

Operations with integers, the effects of multiplying and dividing with rational numbers, the comparative magnitude of
rational and irrational numbers, the approximation of cube and square roots, and the application of proportional
reasoning
Equations, inequalities, and linear functions
The Pythagorean Theorem; the use of ordered pairs, equations, intercepts, and intersections to locate points and lines
in a coordinate plane; and the effect of a dilation in a coordinate plane
The proportionality of similar figures; the necessary levels of accuracy and precision in measurement; the use of
formulas to determine circumference, perimeter, area, and volume; and the use of conversions within and between the
U.S. Customary System and the metric system
The relationships between two variables within one population or sample

Grading Policy:
Standards based grading will be used. It is designed to measure content mastery. Assessments may include, but
are not limited to: in class assignment, homework, quizzes, tests, and end of quarter assessments. (MUST
SHOW WORK FOR FULL CREDIT). Homework is an opportunity for students to practice and will be checked
daily for completion and comprehension. Daily homework assignments will be worth 10 points each. If it is
completely finished, all 10 points will be received, incomplete homework receives 5 points. If no attempt to
complete the homework has been made, you will receive a zero. All missing homework must be completed by
Friday of the week it is due. If you fail to complete the assignment in the given week, a parent contact will be
made. Students that fail to complete their entire assignment will be required to serve a working lunch with a
teacher to finish the assignment. Student can redo homework for higher grade.

Tardiness and Absences:

Students who are tardy will be admitted to class, however, if it is unexcused, the student will be issued a strike.
Excuses should be submitted to the homeroom teacher as soon as the student returns to school from an absence.
It is the students responsibility to make up all work.

Tutoring:
After school tutoring will be offered to student on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Parents please feel free to email
anytime your child is confused or struggling. A 24-hour advance notice will be needed, so I can plan
accordingly. The sooner I know about any problems, the sooner I can help. I am here to do anything in my
power to help your child succeed! Sign-up sheets will be provided to student.

I am very excited about this year! We are going to work very hard, have a lot of fun, and work together
as a team to make this a fantastic and successful year!
