K.S. Grace makes a compelling point about what philanthropy means in today's environment of
development and fundraising. While the word itself embodies the concept of love of mankind, it
is, for fundraising purposes, a motivation to espouse those things that resonate with an
institution's values. To drill more into the point, donors do not likely contribute to causes in which
they do not believe. It is not enough that the community college exists and seeks support from
the community, for the college must be seen as an institution that builds, inspires, educates,
motivates, and in an intrinsic way gives back to the community. When we communicate this
point, aligned with a sound mission and statement of values, the college can expect an
outpouring of support from its community which counts on it for cultural and educational
establishment that it represents.
Grace also discusses the interrelationship of values-based philanthropy, development and
fundraising, and I particularly liked the distinction between development and fundraising. If the
"mission is the message" as Grace states, then the institution that practices this resolutely and
consistently will bolster its fundraising and endowment strategies, and garner commitments from
donors and the community. As Grace points out, however, the institution, while espousing and
communicating well conceived values, must also internally allocate the needed funds to properly
support the development campaigns. This is sometimes overlooked in institutions where
inadequate funding is appropriated, and where the foundation board members do not see clearly
their roles as donors as well as fundraisers. This conundrum can clearly coin the phrase "it takes
money to make money".
The Lansing Community College, since its founding in 1957, has been a presence of educational
growth and attainment in Mid-Michigan. However, as some have shared, its mission statement,
will likely need to be expanded to better reflect the dynamic presence it embodies, its rich
heritage and importance to the community and grateful alumni, and its importance to industry and
employment in Michigan and beyond. Such an expansion of the mission statement will also
inspire more giving to this great institution. Following is the mission statement.

LCCs Mission Statement

LCC exists so that the people it serves have learning and enrichment opportunities to
improve their quality of life and standard of living.
The Colleges guiding principles (listed below) identify core values held by our Board, employees
and volunteers, but seems too long as if it was developed by a committee, and distributed for
broad input attempting to achieve broad consensus. Grace suggests this can lead to
statements that are less effective and cause power and meaning (as well as a values match) to
potentially be lost. A great deal of functionality is described rather than clear statements about
why the College exists, again missing an opportunity to connect with a potential donor-investors
values.
LCCs Guiding Principles
1. LCC will be a Comprehensive Community College, focused upon offering learning
opportunities in four areas: career and workforce development, general education, developmental
education, and personal enrichment.
2. LCC will have a careers emphasis and, in support of this, maintain a technology-rich
environment, fostering user- vs. classroom-level information technology skills.
3. LCC will maintain and support a well-qualified, committed, and competitively compensated
faculty and staff who use both proven traditional and progressive student-centered learning
approaches.
4. LCC commits to continuous improvement in its programs and services and will maintain high
expectations of its students.
5. LCC will be flexible, affordable, and accountable, continuously improving student learning and
support services through the assessment of measurable outcomes.
6. LCC will strive to be state of the art in all that it does, while pursuing a select number of
cutting-edge initiatives.
7. LCC will have a local emphasis in allocating its resources, while maintaining vital connections
to the world, culturally and technologically.
8. LCC, within its broader purpose of serving its entire community in diverse ways, recognizes a
special responsibility to young adults, those from lower income brackets, and those requiring
developmental academic or entry-level career skills.
9. LCC seeks cooperative relationships with both private and public organizations, pursuing
growth not as an end in itself but only when it best serves student and community needs.
10. LCC will prepare those it serves to thrive in a diverse world by reflecting that diversity in its
student enrollment, staffing, planning, and allocation of resources.
11. LCC will manage its finances in a responsible manner; allocating resources and achieving
efficiencies to best serve the priority needs of its students and the taxpayers who support its
operation.

12. LCC is a dedicated community member working for the betterment of all.
