TWS 9: Learning Environment Plan

A. Classroom Management
To create a classroom environment that promotes learning I will first establish a
classroom community that provides both a physically and emotionally safe learning
environment. To maintain this environment in my current classroom, I greet my students
at the door every day to establish a personal and welcoming connection before students
enter the classroom. Each day begins with a morning meeting that establishes a sense of
community and builds relationships in the classroom. Morning meetings first consist of a
greeting that involves students personally greeting one another and making direct eye
contact. After the greeting, students engage in a brief activity that can be a game, song,
team building activity etc. Students can also engage in a form of sharing activity that
involves them sharing information about themselves. Lastly, the morning meeting
consists of news and announcements. This informs students of the plans for the day or
any important information. Morning meetings are a great way to establish a classroom
community and to make students feel a part of the class. This is also a way for students to
contribute to class discussions and to establish relationships with one another.

In the case of a display of severe behavior that could jeopardize the safety of other students I will
try my best to have the student either move away from others or to go outside the classroom. I
will also send another student to a nearby teacher to call for help from an administrator. If I know
that a student has a history of this type of behavior I will assign a student that automatically
knows to go for help in the case of an emergency such as this one.

Reinforcements
Intrinsic
1. Verbal praise and positive feedback.
2. Smiley face on behavior chart in homework folder.
3. Assist the teacher with jobs and errands.
Students that follow the rules and routines will be intrinsically motivated using the three
reinforcements above. Through verbal praise and feedback I will recognize the appropriate
behavior of students that are doing what they are supposed to. This classroom uses an application
called class DOJO that keeps track of points students earn throughout the day. Parents can also
view the application on their own device. I will use a behavior chart that goes home in
homework folders as a form of communication that I use to inform parents of their childs
behavior. A smiley face means that the student had a good day and followed the expectations. I
plan to use this form of communication because not all families have technological devices to
view applications. Lastly, students that demonstrate the appropriate behavior and responsibility
will be allowed to assist with jobs and errands that I assign to them.

Extrinsic
1. Receive a star student sticker
2. Visit the prize box
3. Positive note home to parents

The three extrinsic reinforcements above will be used to reinforce positive behavior in the
classroom. First, students will receive and be able to wear a star student sticker. This sticker
means that a student has done an exceptional job at being a star student and following the rules.
Students will also be able to visit the classroom prize box if they consistently demonstrate
positive behavior. Lastly, I will send home positive notes to parents to tell them what a great job
their child has done at following the expectations.

B. Non Instructional Routines and Procedures

During the first week of school, I will go over all classroom procedures and
expectations. I will model the appropriate procedures and students will practice each
procedure. This includes the procedures for the morning routine, classroom jobs, and
emergencies.
Each morning after students have been greeted at the door, they enter the
classroom and unpack their materials. Students are expected to unpack everything they
need for the day, place it at their desks, and hang their books bags in the designated area.
Next, students make their breakfast and lunch choice using the chart located near the
classroom door. I use this information to take attendance each day. Students then go to
their seat and complete their morning work. The morning work and instructions are on
the white board and students complete the task provided. If students finish their morning
work early, they have the option to work on unfinished assignments or to read

independently. Students can also use their Ipads to view current events or digital books.
Once the morning routine is finished students will come to the floor for morning meeting.
There will be a system of classroom jobs that students will be assigned at the
beginning of every nine weeks. Students will apply for the jobs they feel best suits them
and I will select students for each classroom job. There will be a variety of jobs that
ensure the classroom functions in an organized and systematic approach. A few examples
of classroom jobs include, line leader, door holder, paper filer, pencil sharpener,
classroom cleaner, etc. These jobs provide students with roles that create an organized
system where students know what to expect at all times. The paper filer will distribute
and collect papers and place them in the correct place. The line leader and door holder are
responsible for knowing the procedures in the hallway and for directing the class where
to go at all times. The pencil sharpener is responsible for collecting pencils at the end of
the day and sharpening them. Lastly, the classroom cleaner will do a brief cleanup of the
classroom at the end of the day.
During the first week of school, students will practice the appropriate procedures
to follow during the case of an emergency. Students will also discuss the first aid
emergency kit and where it is located in the classroom. I will discuss each procedure with
students and model the correct and incorrect behavior for each procedure. The class will
also discuss the importance of practicing these procedures and having drills to make sure
everyone knows what to do at all times. During practice drills such as the fire and tornado
drill, I will follow correct protocol and calmly direct my class.
