Art as a Culture

I.

II.

Today, we are going to go on a magical trip to enlighten you about how art is truly a
culture. In a personal interview I had with Tamalin Beauchamp, an art teacher at East
Elementary School, on September 9th 2014, she stated that art is an expression of the
self influenced by culture, but meeting a personal need.
A. According to The American Heritage Dictionary published in the year 2000, art is
defined as the human effort to imitate, supplement, alter, or counter-act the work
of nature.
1. In the American culture, art has also been thought of as a kind of
discipline or a set of principles or methods that govern any craft or
branch of learning.
2. Culture, to me, is the quality of a person or society that arises from a
concern for what is regarded as excellent in arts, letters, manners,
scholarly pursuits, etc.
a. According to BrainyQuote.com, which I accessed on the web
September 8th 2014, Jonathan Swift stated, Vision is the art of
seeing what is invisible to others.
b. Again from BrainyQuote.com, which I accessed on the web
September 8th 2014, Thoreau is quoted, This world is but a
canvas to our imagination.
B. You might ask, Why am I speaking to you today about art as a culture?
1. To me, all styles and forms of art are fascinating in their own way,
and it is even more amazing how they can be brought together to create
something beautiful.
2. Art as a culture is a combination of the variety of different styles and
forms.
a. Art can be easily incorporated into any lifestyle.
b. It is and has always been a part of all world cultures.
C. I have always enjoyed art, and I have had the luxury of becoming more informed
of art in different cultures while doing research about art in an art appreciation
class.
Art as a culture is much more complex than a written definition in any dictionary.
A. Today, art is considered by many unenlightened individuals to be just a trade or a
craft, yet art encompasses far more than that.
1. According to Art vs Crafts, which I accessed on the Barnes and Noble
website, September 8th 2014, MaryAnn Kohl stated, The difference
between art and craft is in the individual, whether they are creating
something new or reproducing someone elses idea.
2. According to contributor Mary-Frances at the website divinecaroline,
which I also read on September 8th 2014, Craft is the skill one learns
in order to create a work of art.
B. In my opinion, art is a universal force that has and continues to touch and
influence other forms of media and the various cultures around the world.

Is everything we see around us truly art?

A. It is true that art comes in many different styles, but it also comes in many forms
as well.
B. Everything we see and touch, every sound and everything we read are works and
forms of art.
1. The most complex and sophisticated super structures and machines to
the simplest little things, in my opinion, are works of art.
2. Although music, photography, filmmaking and editing, and literature
are a handful of different kinds of media, they themselves are forms of
art as well.
In the interview with Tamalin Beauchamp, she firmly believed every culture since the
dawn of time has expressed art in some form. Furthermore, Tamalin mentioned how
the touch of a pencil to the paper is just the beginning. Finally, she stated that there is
no finite art, art will continue as long as man exists.
There are many benefits of art to a culture.
A. One benefit of the culture of art is that there is a wide range of career
opportunities such as graphic art, fashion, animation and motion picture,
performing arts, architecture and physical design, and much more.
B. Another benefit is that art as a culture connects us to others through different
media.
C. It connects us to the history of different cultures by following their art.
D. The main benefit, to me, is the expression of self which lasts through time.
Please take the time to appreciate the world of art around you, and share what you
have learned from this presentation with others.
