VI.
Diversity / Differentiation:
This class is a moderate/severe SDC class with students ranging from kindergarten
rd
through 3 grade. The lesson has been fully adapted to meet the needs of all learners. The
information is projected on the large screen so it is easy for all students to see. The students are
divided into small groups with classroom aides to assist in the assignment to describe the farm
animals. For those unable to write, the Speech Notes App will be available. Also for non-verbal
students who are also unable to write, the App Proloquo2Go will be available to assist the students
with the assignment.
VII.

Technology Inclusion:
The technology in the class will first include the Elmo projector and screen. This
will enable the YouTub video to be projected large enough for the whole class to
see clearly. Also, the class can collaboratively create a Wordle and display it on the
screen large enough for all to see. The App Speech Notes-Free on the IPads will
be used for students who are unable to write.

VIII. Prior Knowledge: This is the first lesson of 10. The students will use their prior
knowledge acquired from their own experiences with farms and farm animals.
Lesson Placement in the Unit: This is lesson 1 of 10 .
IX.

Procedures:

1. Lesson Introduction / Anticipatory Set:

What does the teacher / facilitator do to open the lesson.
The teacher will first show the short YouTube video Down on the Farm to introduce
the upcoming unit on farms and the lesson for the day on farm animals.
Discussion- The teacher will start the conversation by asking students what they
know about farms. The discussion will be directed by the teacher to discuss
specifically farm animals, the topic for the day.
2. Direct Instruction:
The teacher will use the projector connected with the computer to project the
YouTube video Down on the Farm.

Following the video, the teacher will lead a discussion about what students
know about farm animals.
Using the Elmo projector, the teacher will project the book Hattie and the Fox
on the screen for the class to see as he/she reads the book out loud.
The teacher will then inform the students that they will be creating a picture
made of words called a Wordle. They will be asked to think of words that
describe the fox in the book.

3. Student Interaction with lesson content / Guided Practice:

Describe how students will participate and interact with the lesson content.
The teacher then uses the projector connected to the computer to project the
Wordle that the class creates together. *students will list describing words for
the fox in the book and list describing words fort he teacher to add to the Wordle
4. Independent Practice:
Students are then divided into groups to study one farm animal.
Each small group will be provided with a 3D model of the animal (ex. Small
plastic horse, pig, sheep etc.)
With support from a classroom aide or teacher, students are then asked to write
(if able), or give a verbal description of the characteristics of the animal.
5. Review / Closure:
(Presentations) Students are brought back to the rug and students will have the
opportunity to share their describing words for the animal that they were
assigned.
The teacher will then review what was discussed in the lesson for the day.
