intheirjournals.Thetopicofthequickwritewillbetodefine
responsibilityinhisorherownwords.

discusswhattheythinkresponsibilitymeans.
c. Theclasswillcometogetherasalargegroupandtheteacherwill
askafewstudentstotalkaboutthedefinitionsthattheycameup
with.

responsibilitiestheyhaveintheirlives.
2. LessonInput
a. Themaincomponentofthislessonwillbestudentsworking
togethertocreatelistsofresponsibilitiestheyhaveathome,
responsibilitiestheyhaveatschoolandresponsibilitiestheyhave
inthecommunity.
b. Thestudentswillgettheirideasflowingwithaquickwriteforthe
anticipatoryset.Theywillthenbreakapartintosmallgroupsof
threeorfourandthinkofasmanyhomeandschoolresponsibilities
astheycan.
c. Onceeachgrouphasalistforhomeandschoolresponsibilities,the
classwillcomebacktogetherasalargegroup.Eachgroupwill
haveachancetosharetheirlistswiththerestoftheclass.
3. GuidedPractice
a. Asstudentsworkinsmallgroups,theteacherwillbewalking
aroundtheroomtoansweranyquestionsandredirectgroupsthat
maybeofftask.
4. IndependentPractice

a. Studentswillcomeupwiththeirowndefinitionfor
responsibilityduringaquickwrite.
5. Differentiation
a. Strugglingstudentscanusepicturestodefineresponsibilityorto
describeresponsibilitiestheyhaveathomeoratschool.

a. Studentswillcompleteanexitticket,forwhichtheywillwrite
theirowndefinitionofresponsibilityonasheetofpaperand
provideanexampleofaresponsibilityfromhomeanda
responsibilityfromschool.

Thisisthefirstlessononresponsibilitytaughtintheunit.Byactivatingthe
studentspriorknowledgeaboutresponsibility,Iwillbeabletomoreeasilywork
withthemtocomeupwithaclassdefinitionfortheword.Althoughthestudents
maynothavethoughtofitinthisparticularway,manyofthemwillbeableto
identifydifferentresponsibilitiesthattheyhaveandcategorizethembywhere
theyhavetheseresponsibilities.Thislessonwillactasananticipatorysetforthe
secondlessononresponsibility,whichfocusesontheimportanceof

responsibilitiesofcitizens.Themainfocusoftheunitplaniscitizenship;andan
importantaspectofcitizenshipiscitizenresponsibility.
