Can Living Next to an Electrical Transformer Give You Cancer?

Introduction:
In this experiment, we are testing whether or not there is a risk of cancer if you live near an Electrical Transformer.
Our hypothesis is if you live near an electrical transformer, your risk of cancer is higher. Our expected outcome is that the
risk will increase because the amount of radiation given off by the electrical transformer interferes with vital organs. If you
or someone you know live near an electrical transformer then you may have a higher risk of developing and obtaining
cancer. We arrived at our hypothesis by looking at the amount of people who have cancer and live in these areas as well
as the amount of people who live in other places of the world who do not have cancer. We know from prior knowledge that
some electrical devices give off enough radiation to change the normal cell production and causes diseases such as
cancer.

Methods:
For this experiment we researched how many people in electrical production areas actually have had cancer since

Cancer 2

the time they have lived there and comparing the results to other families who live in other areas and do not cancer. The
materials we used were the people and the electrical transformer plants. The independent variable is the amount of
people who live near an electrical transformer. The dependent variable is the chances of those people developing cancer.
The constants are the different types of electric transformers and what they give off. The control is how close these people
live to the transmitters and the test is the change of cells depending on how long the person has lived there. We collected
quantitative data and used the percent of people and cancer patients.

Results:
Table of the Likelihood of Developing Cancer from Living next to an Electrical Transformer

Living near an
electrical plant

within 50 m

507 m

830 m

1400 m

2000 m

stunted growth
(about 40%)

abnormal (about
30-20%)

decreased (about
15%)

low chances
(about 10%)

very low risk (less

than 5%)

Conclusion:
Our results conclude that living near an Electrical Transformer does increase your risk of contracting cancer of any
sort. Our data supports our hypothesis because people who do live near electrical power plants ARE more prone to

Cancer 3

getting cancer rather than people who do not live near electrical power plants. We accept our hypothesis because it has
been proven accurate that radiation expelled from these machines can cause cell deformation. Since we researched our
data, it could be false because we found our data from reliable sources but we are not 100 percent sure if its true. Further
testing could be whether or not citizens have cancer not living near electrical transformers.
