Lit Center: Word Eggs


Grade: 1st grade
Performance Expectation: Students will be able to spell many 3 letter words using picture clues,
and beginning and ending sounds.
Description of center in procedure form:

Student reaches into the basket and pulls out a plastic egg.
Student opens the plastic egg and dumps the content of the egg on the floor/table.
Students first identifies the small figurine inside of the egg ( a plastic pig, bat, bed, etc.)
Next, the student attempts to assemble the three corresponding plastic letters to spell the word

that represents the figurine. Students will be reminded to sound out the words carefully.
5. Repeat process with new egg.
Resources/Materials:

25-30 plastic Easter eggs


25-30 small, plastic figurines representing short words (bed, pig, bat, cat, hat, cup, mug, log,

etc)
Small, plastic letters
A table or floor area
Assessment:The students will be asked to write down 5 words they spelled during the center on
an exit slip to hand in at the end of class.
