Web Page Design Beginning Web / Advanced Web Syllabus

Course Description:
This class is designed to acquaint students with proper Web site design procedures and management techniques to create Web sites suitable for coursework, personal use, and professional
purposes. The course develops an exercise-oriented approach that allows learning by doing. This
class will consist of discussions, Web assignments, projects, Internet searches, and group work.
Students will create dynamic web pages using HTML and focus on typography, graphics and page
layout. Independent collaborative study is encouraged.
Philosophy: Students are expected to meet all course goals and be able to demonstrate knowledge of
course projects, activities and general subject area. Students will work in groups as well as individually.
Basic academic skills in math, science, social studies, and language arts will be integrated into the curriculum.
Community resource people are encouraged and welcome.
Course Rationale:
Rapid technological advancement by businesses to reach global markets, greater focus on industry
certifications and national skill standards, expansion of responsibilities of office workers, portability of
employee skillsall these increase the need for business students in career education programs to have
skills in Web design and maintenance.

Focus: Students will focus on web page design and information technology. Students will create
projects using a variety of digital tools such as web editing programs, web blog programs, and web
design editing tools in Microsoft Note Pad to create html hyper-text. In addition, students will
engage in manual and online research and create citations for sources used. Students will be

evaluated on: 1. Craftsmanship- use of media and materials. Problem- solving inventive or creative
choices. 2. Presentation accuracy and neatness in display of work. 3. Quality of response - in written
work, critique/discussion.

8. How can I design a website to reach a certain goal, such as to educate or tell a story?

Business Dress: Students will be required to wear business dress once a month. Teacher will explain
business dress requirements prior to students business dress-up day.
Web Design Restock Supplies/ CTSO Organization Membership: Future Business Leadership
Association (FBLA).
The course supply restock cost is for FBLA membership fee cost per student which is $20. These funds are
used to supply the student with most of the necessary materials for the course (membership fees, printer
paper, printer cartridges, folders, etc.). If you have not paid the membership cost, please send a check in the
amount of $20 payable to Whitesburg P-8 School In the FOR section of the check, please write Web Design,
FBLAMr. Owens. Drivers license numbers should be written on all checks.
Academic Dishonesty:
Plagiarism and cheating are serious offenses and will be punished based on the student
Hand book policy; students will receive a zero on the assignment and possible detention.
Discipline Policy: Students will follow teacher classroom rules and procedures. Whitesburg P-8
Middle School follows the policies established by the Huntsville City Schools. Students must be in
their assigned seat when bell rings to begin class.
Assignments/Attendance:
All assignments are due at the end of class on the date due. Late work may be accepted the same
week only for reduced credit. Lateness will result in 5 to 20 lost points. Tardy students will

Attendance is extremely important! Arrive for class on time and participate time management is
extremely important. Work only on material for this class during class time It is the students
responsibility to come see me after absences to find out what was missed. Work cannot be made up if
the absence is found to be unexcused. Class starts on time. If a student receives 3 tardies they
receive a lunch detention/silent lunch. Students who are tardy will sign-in using the teachers tardy
notebook. Hand Signals: Mr. Owens will use hand signals to gain students attention. Mr. Owens will
raise his hand above his head and all students will stop immediately and raise their hand above their
heads to acknowledge attention. Other hand signals include: pencil sharpening, bathroom pass,
trashcan, and understanding hand signal prompts.
Class Requirements:
Each student will have a Three-ring note book binder and students are to maintain their
organized note book binder which contain students notes, handouts, assignments, graded work,
etc. The notebook binder must have at least six tabs labeled for each section. Be prepared for class
everyday bring your class 3-ring notebook binder. Tabs label include: student notes, handouts,
assignments, vocabulary words, tests/quizzes, and syllabus/resume. Saving all your documents in a

folder on your laptop this is strongly encouraged to save work and transfer from school to home, etc.
Back up all your documents online software using Edmodo back-pack in case your laptop crashes.
Students will bring to class daily notebook paper with pencils and black ink pens. No use of Red ink
or Pink when using writing instruments! Teacher uses Red ink only, not students! Note:
Students will receive notebook binder checks for a grade when teacher makes announcement for
notebook check.
Assessment Plan: Formative and Summative Evaluations Students earn point values for each
assignment completed during a grading period. These points are added together and divided by the
total possible points for that grading period to determine the score. Daily assignments, individual and
group projects, homework, Weekly quizzes/tests, and class participation make up the assessment
criteria. Class participation is graded daily by teacher observations. Some assignments will be
posted on-line using Edmodo, so students will be required to check Edmodo on a daily basis!

Students who do not turn-in assignments when they are due can still turn-in assignments if
student speaks with teacher to arrange document date for turn-in.
Grading:
Each new skill we study will have corresponding exercises and projects. The class is graded on a pointbased system, meaning every activity is assigned a specific point value based on its requirements and
difficulty. The point value is made known to all when it is assigned. Student grades are based on the
number of points he/she has earned out of the number of points possible. Students will earn points
on projects throughout the course based on rubrics. Grades will be based on the following scale:
A = 90% - 100%

B = 80% - 89% C = 70% - 79%

D = 60% - 69%

F = 50% - 59%
