Title of Activity & Source of Assessments For This Lesson: Graded Reading Passage; Bader Reading and
Language Inventory (Bader, Lois & Pearce, Daniel).
Description of Learner: Trinity is a female third grader at a second grade reading level. She does well with
recognizing vowel and letter sounds, but struggles with producing words with those sounds. This puts her in the
middle within word pattern stage. She needs some help with reading fluency, but loves to write. She also does
well with reading comprehension. She is a very hard worker, and never complains when she is struggling or
doesnt understand a concept. She is well spoken, and emotionally advanced enough to know when to ask for
help, and when to solve the problem for herself.
Ohio Common Core ELA Standard: RF.3.3- Know and apply grade level phonics and word analysis skills in
decoding words. (Identify and know the meaning of the most common prefixes and derivational suffixes.)

ENGAGE
Independent Reading Books from www.storylineonline.net
Literacy Strategies: Phonics
Procedures: Matching Suffixes
Allotted Time: 20 Minutes
Opening: Teacher- Hey guys! Its been a while since weve been here! How were you while we were
gone?
[give time for students to respond]
Teacher- That sounds great! We missed you all a lot. Well today we are going to be talking
about suffixes. Do you guys know what suffixes are?
Students respond
Teacher- Thats right! Suffixes are letters added to the end of the word that gives it a new
meaning. What are some words that we can change by adding a suffix to? Maybe an ed or
ing..?
Students brainstorm words
Teacher- Great! So on this sheet we have a list of suffixes, and then on the other side of the
sheet we have their meaning. What you guys need to do is look at the example suffix and draw a
line to match it to its meaning.
Teacher Modeling: Teacher- Ill do the first one for you! The first suffix is ed, and the example is walked.
I know that if I use the word walked it means I did it in the past. So Im going to look for a definition that
talks about the past, and here it is! It says, something that was done in the past. So Im going to draw a
line from walked to something that was done in the past. And now I have my first match.
Guided Practice: Teacher- Lets do the next one together! So the next is er, and the example is jumper.
What do you guys think jumper means?
Students respond.
Teacher- Yeah! A jumper is a person who jumps. So what are we going to do next?
Students respond.
Teacher- Right! We need to find the definition on the other side. I found it. Have you
guys found it?
Wait for students to find answer
Teacher- Now lets draw a line from jumper to a person that does something.
Independent Practice: Teacher- You guys did great! Now you can do it by yourselves, but if you need
any help your tutor will be next to you to help.
Class Discussion and/or Group Activity: This is a small group activity for three students and three
tutors
Closure of Lesson: Great job guys! I know that was a little harder since it was new, but you did a great
job with it! Now were going to talk about some other suffixes and prefixes that we know, and see in our
readings. Ms. Erica will explain the next activity to you.
Informal: The matching sheet and suffix games serve as informal assessments to test the students knowledge
and understanding of the concept.
